The ISO 216 A-size paper dimensions are shown in the table below, in millimeters and inches (values can be converted to cm by dividing the mm value by 10). The A series paper size picture on the right gives a visual explanation of how the sizes relate to each other - for example A5 is half of an A4 sheet of paper and A2 is half of an A1 sheet of paper.

4A0 and 2A0 - DIN 476 high-dimensional formats
There are also paper sizes larger than A0 - these are 4A0 and 2A0. These sizes are not covered by the ISO 216 standard, but are typically used for large format paper. The origin of these formats comes from the German standard DIN 476, on the basis of which ISO 216 was created.
Size A paper size tolerances and errors
- ISO 216 allows production tolerances for A-size paper up to the following values:
- ± 1.5 mm (0.06 in) for sizes up to 150 mm (5.9 in)
- ±2 mm (0.08 in) for sizes ranging from 150 to 600 mm (5.9 to 23.6 in)
- ± 3 mm (0.12 in) for any dimension above 600 mm (23.6 in)
A series of formats characteristics and properties
- ISO 216 characterizes this paper size with the following parameters:
- The length divided by the width of the sheet is equal to the value 1.4142
- Each subsequent dimension A(N) is defined as A(N-1) cut in half parallel to its short side.
- A0 format has an area of 1 square meter.
- The standard length and width of each size are rounded to the nearest millimeter.
Note: The last point is there because the square root of 2 in the aspect ratio does not always give integers.
International implementation and use of the sheet format
A paper sizes are now widely used throughout the world except the United States, Canada and parts of Mexico. A4 has become the standard size for business letters in English-speaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, which are accustomed to using the imperial number system everywhere. In Europe, paper sizes were adopted as a formal standard in the mid-20th century, and from there they spread throughout the world.

Any artist or person who is forced to use it for work can tell a lot about the importance and advantages of this type of stationery. It is of high quality and abrasion resistance.
The standard size of whatman paper in centimeters is 59.4x84.1 cm, has an A1 format and is called “educational”.
What is it and how did it appear
This type of paper differs from others only in quality and manufacturing method. The sheet size fits the standard format system. Main differences:
there is no pronounced texture;
more dense;
more durable, images on it last much longer;
refers to a type of drawing paper.
But, despite all the differences, the main parameter, namely, the size of the Whatman paper format, is the same as other paper. It’s just that in 1750, one very smart man named James Whatman Sr., who had his own printing business, came up with a technology that made it possible to produce sheets of paper without traces of a grid. It is in the manufacturing process that the whole secret lies, and the size of whatman paper has nothing to do with it. As a result, this stationery owes its name to its inventor.
In the vastness of our Motherland, this type of office appeared only in the 19th century, and was called “rough” paper. It was mainly used, and is still used now, for drawing or drawing with pencil, ink or watercolors.
Options
Whatman paper in centimeters has the same length, width and area as standard sheets of a certain format. True, if in relation to ordinary paper A0 is considered the standard, which has an area equal to 1 m2, then with whatman paper things are a little different.
What is the standard for Whatman paper? Next after A0 is A1. More often GOZNAK products are used for work, as they are of very good quality. Such a sheet has a size of 610x860 millimeters in centimeters. It can be classified as a separate category of stationery, since the structure not only differs from the usual one, it can have various nuances. Moreover, these nuances do not depend in any way on the size of whatman paper you purchase.
The quality of the sheet and its characteristics play a significant role. When choosing them, you need to know exactly why you want to purchase this particular type of office. Ordinary Whatman paper can be called drawing paper, since it is mainly used to create various plans, diagrams or tables, but in the artistic field it has also taken its place. Today you can buy such a specific type of stationery as ground paper. It is suitable for several techniques and is universal, and it does not matter what size the Whatman paper is.
Nuances
But, despite the fact that this stationery came to us from Europe, and for sizes we use international format standards, which are also European, Goznak paper has some differences. The standard size of whatman paper in centimeters is 59.4x84.1, but the same state sign product is 610x860, with a density of 200 g/m2.
But the size of half a Whatman paper, if, of course, you buy it and don’t make it yourself, when printed, it coincides with the value of our foreign friends - 420x594 mm. Everyone knows that the ratio of one to the square root of two is used to determine paper parameters. Thus, if we fold a sheet in half, we get two other sheets that are identical to the first one, but have a smaller area and sides. Cutting in half standard sheet A1, we won’t be able to do A2, since the whatman paper of the state sign is a little larger in size than is customary in Europe.
So let's summarize all the differences:
different standard (A1 and A0);
different manufacturing method;
different characteristics.
Before purchasing, you should clarify whether the extra millimeters along the edge of the sheet matter.

The most common ISO 216 standard format in the world according to GOST 5773-90.
All paper sizes according to the ISO 216 standard they have the same aspect ratio. To put it in simple words, the length of a sheet of format A1 equal to half the width of the sheet A0, and if it’s even easier to explain, then look at the picture below and you will understand everything that I tried to explain.
I propose to consider where and what paper formats are often used:
- Sheet A0 and A1— drawings, posters and posters
- Sheet A3, B4 and A2- drawings, diagrams, newspapers
- Sheet A4— office paper, documents, letters, forms, magazines, catalogs, in advertising materials, consumables for printers and copiers
- Sheet A5 — greeting cards, identification cards, notebooks, notepads, leaflets, forms, promotional materials
- SheetB5, A5, B6, A6- books, booklets, brochures, postcards
- Formats C4, C5, C6- envelopes for letters on a sheet of A4 paper: unfolded (C4), folded in half (C5), folded in three (C6)

Sizes A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, A0 in millimeters and megabytes
Any image file format carries information about the width and height of the file in pixels, as well as the file resolution you specified. Depending on these three numbers, image editors and layout programs calculate the physical dimensions that will be obtained when printing the image and display them as background information You, in any coordinate system you choose (cm, inches, picas, etc.).
It is more convenient to judge the size of an image by the file size in megabytes. Below is a table of the required file sizes (tif without compression) in megabytes for printing standard formats

The main sizes of paper sheets produced at all factories in the country are:
- A1 (594841 mm): Used in professional layout and design;
- A2 (420594 mm.): A professional option for artistic works by masters from different fields of art. It is most often used in printing houses for printing banners, by students for diploma and term papers. DPI lovers will also like this format: it is quite extensive and will fit harmoniously into the surroundings;
- A3 (297420 mm): A4 sheet format increased by 2 times; optimal for professional student work assigned in educational institutions. Paintings, floristry, decorative panels, collages made in this size look elegant, miniature, and are a universal holiday gift
- A4 (210297 mm.): universal option for creative people, especially children starting to learn to draw. The A4 sheet format is suitable for small sketches with ink, felt-tip pens, pencils, gel pen, as well as for printed materials. Widely and often used in printing houses.
In accordance with ISO standards, which are international, paper is divided into a number of series (A, B, C). Below is a table with these series, format and sizes.

Leaflets are a cheap and effective way to convey the necessary advertising information to the target audience. They are available in two sizes: A5 and A6. Which one is more preferable? Let's try to figure it out. However, for ease of understanding, we will first give definitions to these formats.
Leaflet sizes A5 and A6
- Leaflet a5 format. To visualize what the A5 format will be like, fold an A4 sheet of paper in half. In other words, A5 format has dimensions of 148*210 mm. This is the most popular and sought after size among our customers;
- Leaflets in a6 size. You can visually imagine the size by folding an A4 sheet in half or folding an A5 sheet in half. This size is used not only for producing leaflets, but also flyers.
Features of formats
On A4 leaflets you can place a large amount of information, much more than on small A6 leaflets. The average between them is A5 leaflets, but, unlike A6, they cannot fit in a pocket without folding.
An A5 leaflet will allow you to highlight all the features of the company as much as possible, and the compact A6 size will allow you to keep it in your purse or wallet longer, and can be used as a bookmark.
Based on this, we conclude that the size of the leaflet depends on the purpose of the advertising product and the amount of information that needs to be conveyed to the target audience. If there is a lot of information, an a5 size leaflet is suitable. However, before making such a decision, you should think about whether all the information is important, and whether some of it is secondary?
You can order the production of leaflets in A5 and A4 formats, flyers, booklets, and business cards in our printing house. We use digital and offset paper methods, and printing costs vary depending on the print run.
