Method 1

By default, to take a screenshot in the game, you need to press the F12 key. You can reassign the button in the client settings.

Also, if F12 does not work for you, then consider the causes of the problem:

Steam overlay not enabled

In this case, just go to the game settings and in the window that opens, check the box next to “Enable Steam overlay in game”

Now go to the client settings and in the “In game” section also check the box to enable the overlay.

In the game settings and in the dsfix.ini file there are different extension values

If everything is fine with the overlay, then the problems arose with the game. First, go into the game and in the settings look at what extension is set there (for example, 1280x1024). Remember it, or better yet, write it down. You can now exit the game.

Next you need to find the dsfix.ini file. You need to look for it in the root folder of the game. You can simply enter the file name into the search in Explorer.

Open the found file using Notepad. The first numbers you see are the resolution - RenderWidth and RenderHeight. Replace the RenderWidth value with the value of the first digit from those you wrote down, and write down the second digit in RenderHeight. Save and close the document.

After these manipulations, you will again be able to take screenshots using the Steam service.

Method 2

If you don’t want to delve into why you can’t take a screenshot using Steam, and it doesn’t matter to you how to take pictures, then you can use a special button on the keyboard to take screenshots - Print Screen.

That's all, we hope we were able to help you. If you still were unable to take a screenshot during the game, share your problem in the comments and we will definitely help you.

Introduction

There are a lot of users on Steam who like to take beautiful screenshots, but not everyone takes into account some points in which their work could be improved. That is why I decided to write this guide.

To create beautiful screenshots you don’t have to be a professional photographer or artist, just know a few basics and follow some conditions that will be given in this guide.

I also want to say that I am the owner of a video card from NVIDIA, so everything that is said below will mostly apply to the green camp. AMD will be mentioned only occasionally in certain moments where possible.

Preparation

Graphics Settings

Before capturing the moment for a better screenshot, I advise you to turn up all the maximum possible graphics settings, which is very obvious, but still worth mentioning. You don't need to run like this all the time, especially if you have a weak system. It is enough to use it when necessary. You can also increase the resolution, but this is at your discretion, the main thing is that they are not lower than the modern standard (16:9, 1920 x 1080).

Format and resolution

I noticed that screenshots taken in a wide format, such as 21:9, are valued better than the same 16:9. If you have a 1920 x 1080 monitor, no problem. This can be fixed programmatically, provided you have an NVIDIA video card. It is worth warning that this method cannot be used with DSR technology. Screenshots also look good in portrait format; this is usually done using Photoshop.

Hattiwatti's Cinematic Tools

Cinematic tools are designed for passionate gaming screenshotters and content creators, whose options are often limited to games without a screenshot mode or themes that are designed for casual users. You can find out more about it on the developer's website.

Other Image Capture Software

  • MSI Afterburner - this program is used for overclocking, but it can also take screenshots in pure PNG without loss or compression.
  • AMD ReLive - if you have a graphic AMD processor, this is their proprietary software with advanced tools for taking screenshots.
  • Fraps is a popular tool for taking screenshots and recording videos from games.
  • Steam - It’s no secret that Steam also has an image capture function. By default, to take a screenshot in the game, you need to press the F12 key. You can reassign the button in the client settings. It would seem to be the most convenient option, but alas, not the best. When taking screenshots through the steam client, you will lose quality.
For more information, see the “Programs and Utilities” section.

Additionally

In some games you can find a built-in photo mode (free camera), for example in games like Assassin's Creed Origins or Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. In others, this feature may be presented in the developer console.

Graphics post-processing

SweetFX

SweetFX is a utility that provides advanced graphic settings to games. It belongs to the shader injector class, that is, it adds and changes code in d3d.dll (this is a DirectX library). With its help, you can change those parameters in the game that are not provided in the game settings themselves. You can manually change anti-aliasing, sharpen the image, add Bloom or pseudo-HDR to the game, tweak the gamma, add vignetting, and even enable split-screen to see the difference before and after.

I myself used this utility only a few times, and then stopped. I don’t know why, maybe I like the game the way the developers intended it, or I’m just too lazy to install several programs and then look for the necessary presets. If you don't want to use Photoshop every time, then why not.

Advantages of this utility:

  • The downloaded preset can be turned on and off directly in the game using hotkey, often without any reloads or freezes.
  • The game can become more beautiful without a drop in FPS. If you “play” with just colors (simulating HDR), this will not affect performance in any way.
  • Changing the mentioned settings does not conflict in any way with other image capture programs. Moreover, the program itself can take screenshots.

Image processing

If you don’t like the SweetFX option, then Photoshop will always come to the rescue. But this does not mean that you need to choose one thing; you can also combine them. However, successful photographs can be posted without processing.

Working in Photoshop is probably the best way to transform a screenshot into a masterpiece. Sometimes even from an ordinary screenshot you can create a good work, it all depends on how well you know how to use Photoshop. I personally like this option.

We can confidently consider them the best in this category Adobe Photoshop Lightroom And Adobe Photoshop . I advise you to use Lightroom , because this is basically the same Adobe Photoshop , but with more flexible color settings. In addition, it is not difficult to learn; after downloading the program in Russian, everything will become intuitive.

An alternative could be free program GIMP or web editor Pixlr.

SteaScree

is a simple, open-source, cross-platform utility that makes it much easier to upload screenshots to Steam Cloud taken without using Steam in an overlay game. You simply select photos, select a game and SteaScree will do the rest.

Features of SteaScree:

  • ability to copy screenshots for different games before preparing them all for upload
  • retrieves game titles from Steam's public internet API
  • handles creation date correctly
  • can automatically resize huge screenshots that exceed Steam Cloud limits
  • support for multiple user accounts
  • automatically converts PNG, BMP, TIFF screenshots to JPEG
  • support for multiple steam units
  • even supports non-Steam games
  • cross-platform and open source

Useful tips

Introduction

Before you start, study the work of famous photographers for some inspiration, you can learn a lot from the masters.

I'm not saying every screenshot you take needs to be high art, but sometimes when I'm feeling uninspired, looking at the portfolios of real photographers can spark a creative spark. Additionally, studying the work of the masters can lead you to think about other elements of photography such as composition, angle, lighting, exposure, etc., which we will discuss separately below.

Rule of thirds

One of the main aspects of composing a great shot is the rule of thirds. Mentally divide the scene into a grid of nine rectangles, then make sure your subject is positioned along the lines or where they intersect.

This technique is an excellent way to help you achieve skillful, balanced composition, and has been used by photographers, painters, filmmakers, and almost every kind of visual artist for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Not every shot needs to follow this rule, as there are many composition techniques, but it is the main thing to keep in mind.

Field of view

Widen your field of view to show more of the landscape or bring large, distant objects into the frame. This is one of the best ways convey the scale of a landscape or object, but don't go too far. You will get the fisheye effect if you overuse it, making your image look distorted and unnatural.

Approximation

You can also enhance your field of view to focus on finer details in a scene. Vistas and sunsets are fun to shoot, and modern games are getting ridiculously good at them, but it's the little things that can be just as impressive. Whether it's a flower, an animal, a costume detail, or a subtle architectural flourish, using a virtual lens to examine the intricacies of a game world can be just as compelling as capturing the bigger picture.

Scale

Placing your character in front of a perspective, or anything larger for that matter, greatly improves the sense of scale. This is especially effective in space games like Elite Dangerous, where the silhouette of the ship can make its various celestial bodies—planets, stars, etc.—appear incredibly huge.

Depth of field

Also known as aperture on a traditional camera, knowing how depth of field works allows you to focus on a subject in the foreground or background while intentionally blurring the rest of the image.

Adjust the intensity of the blur and focus and you can create impressive, photorealistic images, but keep it subtle. Again, this is one of those effects that is often overused. Skillful use of shallow depth of field, especially when focusing on a specific subject in the image, can really enhance the sense of presence in the frame.

Portrait shots

While we're talking about depth of field, portrait photography is an entire art form, but a good technique is to adjust the depth of field to make your subject the focal point of the image, without any background clutter distracting the eye.

Portraits can be close-ups of the characters' faces, full body shots, and everything in between. The important thing is that it's the person at the heart of the image, not the place, but you can also use the environment to reveal something about your personality.

Exposition

The camera's exposure determines how much light reaches the film or sensor, and many photo modes simulate this. If the image feels like it's lacking punch, increase the exposure a little to make it sharper and brighter.

But if you go too far, you'll blow up the image and it will look like a nuclear bomb just went off. Increasing the exposure can also reduce or erase details around lights or shadows, since with all things, find the right balance depending on what you want to convey.

Times of Day

One thing that goes hand in hand with exposure is the time of day/night of your scene. Changing the light in games with day/night cycles can radically change the mood of a scene (think Dying Light). So, wait for the right moment to shoot. A place may look dull at midday but transform into something beautiful at dusk.

Some games give you manual control over the time of day, such as photo mode in No Man's Sky or GTA V's director mode. Otherwise, like real photography, it's all a matter of watching and waiting.

Filters

Many photo modes come with built-in filters that can reproduce a variety of effects: old movies, analog films, retro games. But most of them are ugly and you should avoid using them in most cases. But in some games, you can adjust the intensity of the filter to blend them with the natural colors of the image, and you can create interesting, stylish effects if you get the balance just right. It's worth experimenting with them.

Post-processing

The best thing to do is to take the original images into a graphics package like Photoshop or Lightroom and adjust the brightness, contrast, and color levels manually. Even the slightest adjustment can make a huge difference to the final composition. Just make sure whatever you use to capture screenshots, whether it's Steam or something like Fraps, outputs an uncompressed image. You don't want a load of gnarly jpg artifacts to ruin your photo.

Steam is a popular platform computer games. On forums, users often ask the question: “where are the Steam screenshots?” This article contains information that will help you find the answer to this question.

The Steam platform was created for avid gamers to play and communicate on it. Each user has a personal gaming profile, where Steam screenshots are stored, from which the gamer communicates, shares information, and also boasts of successful screenshots of moments in the game. These features are important for gamers, especially the sharing of successful gameplay photos.

How to take a screenshot and download?

There are several ways to capture the moment of the game:

What are screenshots for?

Gamers will need screenshots in the following cases:

  • filling out your personal Steam profile with photo reports of playing games;
  • distributing screenshots from the game on forums or among other gamers;
  • transferring screenshots to special photo banks.

Searching for screenshots in the program

An easy way to find out where to find Steam screenshots is to use the program itself. Thanks to this method, you do not need to determine in which system folder the files are located. So, where to find screenshots in Steam and what you need to do for this:

  1. Open the "Client" panel.
  2. Find icon gaming platform Steam
  3. Right-click to open a special menu called “View”.
  4. Select the “Screenshots” item.
  5. After the manipulations have been performed, a window will open on the screen where the screenshots you took in Steam are located. All photos are sorted into special categories that correspond to a specific game. On the page you will also find a menu with which you can go to any folder to select the desired screenshot.
  6. There is an “Upload” button on the right side of the screen; it will help you move the selected image to the Steam Cloud. This is a special cloud space through which your files will be available to other users.

The above method of searching for screenshots helps you send the image directly to the page in social network Facebook. In addition, the program searches for files on the system drive where Steam screenshots are stored. To do this, click on the image and select the “Open/show on disk” button.

Location of screenshots on your computer

Finding images through a computer is much more difficult than through the Steam program, where screenshots are located. To do this you should:

  1. Open the system drive “C” on the computer.
  2. Go to the folder with program files (Program Files).
  3. Next, you need to open a folder called “Steam”.
  4. The next step is to open the “Userdata” folder.
  5. Here you will find many folders with a numeric ID code (folder names). The difficulty is to understand which number belongs to which game. The gamer will need to open the directories that contain the “Remote” files.
  6. Among the folders, look for “thumbnails”. This is the folder where Steam screenshots are located in a compressed format. The images will appear in a special window.

To make it easier for you to find screenshots from Steam on your computer, we recommend that in the program settings you independently select the folder where the screenshots will be sent.

Steam is a convenient program that is used by millions of users around the world to purchase and manage their games. But often many people have questions about where the Steam folder is, how to find the games folder on Steam, and where is the folder with screenshots.

Where in the folderSteamgames and screenshots?

Knowing where game files and screenshots are located on Steam is very important, because many people sooner or later need to add third-party files to games, for example, various modifications, or there is a need to copy screenshots taken through Steam inside the game.

Where to find games inSteam

The folder with games is located inside Steam, and if you don’t know exactly which section to look for, you can fiddle around for quite a long time. So, to get to the games, follow the instructions below:

Where to find screenshots inSteam

With screenshots on Steam, everything is not as simple as with the game folder. There is no separate folder where all the screenshots taken in games are stored, and the folders themselves have digital names. There are two ways to get to the Steam screenshots section.
