How does a firewall protect your computer? What is a firewall and how to disable it in different versions of Windows How to disable the firewall in windows xp

Hello guys, What is a firewall in general and why do I personally not recommend turning it off? A firewall, or as it is called in English, Firewall, is a program that looks at what programs are getting into the network, and it itself knows how this can be done and which cannot.

That is, the firewall is what controls network connections in Windows. In a sense, this is even more important than the work of the antivirus... And I will try to explain in simple words why...

This is what an antivirus does? The antivirus looks at what you have on your computer, regularly checks it for viruses, or does it a little slowly, but constantly. There are all sorts of technologies like heuristic analysis and the like. Well, that is, the antivirus catches the virus, and here I want to emphasize what exactly it catches. The firewall has nothing to do with viruses at all, it simply controls access to the Internet for programs. Those programs that have a bad reputation will not be able to access the Internet. And this could be a virus, or more specifically, a Trojan that wants to transfer data to its creator! That is, the antivirus may not immediately detect it, but the firewall will not allow such a stranger access to the network and the Trojan will not be able to transfer your passwords and logins to the hacker. Well, is it a little clear? I hope so!

So, I hope you understand the importance of this firewall. I’ll also write to you what I did, but if you want, you don’t have to read it, but go straight to disabling the firewall in Windows 10. So look, I installed Outpost Firewall for myself (I think this is the best firewall) and in it I allowed access to network only to a limited number of programs, and then switched it to blocking mode. And now it allows Internet access only to those programs that I added to the list! And everyone else is prohibited. That is, you understand that now no matter what virus I have, it will not be able to send anything to the hacker, since his access to the Internet will be blocked!

That's it! Now I will show you how to disable this firewall in Windows 10! So look, right-click on Start and select Control Panel from the menu there (and this menu can also be called up with the Win + X buttons):

Then look for Windows Firewall among the icons and launch it:

Then a window like this will open, here you click on this button:

Now look, here you will have two settings and here you need to check the disable boxes in both, that is, both at the top and at the bottom:

Well that's all! Now you have disabled the firewall in Windows 10, after which you will see this window with red bars, well, like the computer is in danger:

But since I’m already writing about disabling Windows security, I’ll also write how to disable the defender!

How to disable Windows 10 Defender permanently?

The defender, unlike the firewall, already performs a slightly different role; it is essentially a built-in antivirus. But as you understand, due to the fact that this is a Windows antivirus, few people like it precisely because it is Windows. And many want to disable it, because they install a third-party antivirus, and for some users this defender protects so much that the computer slows down, so such things gentlemen!

To disable it, go to the Control Panel again and launch the Windows Defender icon there:

Then a window will open where you need to click on Settings:

The Windows settings window will open, there you need to move all the sliders so that they are in the Off state:

After this, the Defender himself will turn red:

Well, that's all, I showed how to disable the built-in Defender and Firewall (aka firewall). But watch carefully and don’t just disable them, but only when you really need it, for example, if you are going to install a third-party antivirus.

But I have prepared another bonus for you. In general, there is one recipe for how to turn off everything, well, in general, all this telemetry, espionage, all this protection, security... All this stuff can be turned off using the utility. It disables not only spying, but also everything else, in general, I advise you to look at this utility!

Well, that’s all, I hope that I wrote everything here correctly and that everything was clear to you. I wish you good luck and that you don’t have any problems and everything goes well

If you are interested in how to secure a computer that has Internet access, you have probably wondered what a firewall is.

Firewall(from English firewall - fire wall), also known as firewall (same translation from German brandmauer), also known as firewall, is a software or hardware component that filters network traffic and performs a protective function for network fragments or individual nodes.
His work resembles a checkpoint on the border of a state, or a security post at the entrance to a closed territory.

Operating principle

A firewall can be thought of as a set of filters through which traffic sequentially passes. Each filter checks stream elements against a specific rule. A set of filtering rules (ruleset) determines which packet will cross the screen (allow operation) and which will be discarded (deny operation without notification that the service is unavailable, or reject with notification).

Packages are selected according to one of two principles:

  1. Everything that is not prohibited passes. The rules specify the characteristics of packets that cannot be passed through.
  2. Only what is allowed passes. The rules specify which packets can be passed through.

The second principle provides greater security at the cost of complicating system administration.

Depending on what level network protocols the screen is working, it can be classified as one of the following types:

  • packet filters (analyze headers (but not transmitted data) of packets, vulnerable to fragmented packets and data falsification, such as IP address spoofing);
  • session level gateways (work as intermediaries between the protected host and other network nodes, pass packets only within the established connection, like the previous type, do not analyze the contents of packets, which is a potential vulnerability);
  • application level intermediaries (also act as intermediaries in the connection, but are additionally capable of analyzing transmitted data, blocking unwanted commands, more reliable than the previous ones, but more resource-intensive);
  • State inspectors (are a fusion of the above types with adjustments in favor of performance).

Firewalls can be challenged by encrypted or tunneled traffic that cannot be analyzed against filters. For such cases, the safest solution is to discard such data.

Personal firewalls work on the same principles as firewalls, but have a number of features:

  • the ability to determine which software is trying to establish a network connection;
  • different rules for different users;
  • the presence of a “learning mode”, which allows you to manually configure permissions and restrictions on network activity for all programs.

Examples of well-known firewall programs

The operating system has a built-in defender, and many antivirus programs have a firewall included, but this will not prevent you from choosing, installing and configuring a firewall at your discretion if you wish.

Popular free firewalls for Windows:

  • Comodo Firewall;
  • Outpost Firewall Free;
  • ZoneAlarm Free Firewall;
  • PC Tools Firewall Plus;
  • Emsisoft Online Armor Free;
  • Privatefirewall;
  • TinyWall (not as popular as the others, but does not conflict with the system’s built-in firewall and is effective against Trojans).

How to set up a firewall for Windows?

Setting up a firewall- a complex task that requires a wealth of knowledge to complete. It is necessary to develop a consistent set of filter rules that could provide protection and at the same time not interfere with the operation of useful programs. Each rule has a number of properties, and all of them must be set correctly.

There are a number of methods available to simplify the task:

We’ll look separately at how to allow access for individual applications:

How to disable the firewall in Windows?

When using another full-fledged firewall, the built-in one can be turned off.

The fastest way is to use the command line:

If necessary, the command to enable it looks like this:

netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state on

The Windows 7 operating system is already equipped with built-in security mechanisms. They are not as effective as commercial programs, but some are disabled only when installing commercial products and in free programs usually absent. The Windows Firewall, or firewall, acts as a filter that blocks the ability to transmit or receive data through network ports, protecting the computer from viruses. In addition to positive functions, a firewall can have negative ones, preventing programs from working on the network. One of the most common problems occurs when playing computer games online. The firewall may not allow game requests through the network. We will tell you how to disable the firewall in this article.

There are several ways to access the system firewall mode. All of them are very simple and require virtually no additional knowledge. These methods can be divided into several groups:

  • shutdown in the control panel;
  • shutdown using the command line;
  • disable in group policies.

Firewall operating modes can be controlled in different ways and each of them has its own advantages, so it is advisable to study all the options, and you can settle on one that will be the most convenient and will appeal to you the most.

Disabling in the Control Panel

To disable the firewall normally in the Control Panel, open “Control Panel” -> “System and Security” -> “Windows Firewall”. The Windows Firewall status and the ability to configure it opens.

To disable the firewall, use the “Change notification settings” and “Turn Windows Firewall on or off” options. With their help, parameter settings are managed.

IN different types networks ( home network, work and public) change the firewall settings separately. To completely disable the firewall, you must disable it for each network type. This action does not require a reboot, so all changes take effect immediately and allow you to immediately continue further actions.

Disabling via system services

System services maintain a list of programs that are enabled automatically by the operating system or through other programs as needed. Disabling the firewall using system services can be done in three ways. Let's describe all three:

1. Open “Control Panel” -> “Administration” -> “Services”. A list opens showing a list of all system services and the ability to configure their operation.

Among the list of services, we find the “Windows Firewall” service and open it. In the properties window of the Windows Firewall service, we need two functions:

  • launch type
  • state.

The startup type determines the further actions of this service the next time the computer is turned on, and the properties display and allow you to manage this service at the moment.

In the “Status” column, you must stop the service, and in the “Startup type” column, you must disable it so that this service will no longer start on the computer.

2. Click “Start”, place the cursor in the “Search programs and files” field, type the name “msconfig”, using this program you can set the startup and operation parameters of the computer, and launch it. The system configuration program appears. Go to the “Services” tab.

We find “Windows Firewall” in the list of services, uncheck the box, click OK and be sure to restart the system for the changes to take effect. This action will disable the service and the firewall will not start until we enable it back.

3. The next method is how to disable the Windows 7 firewall. Right-click on the “Computer” icon and select “Manage”. The computer management console opens. Expand the “Services and Applications” section and open the “Services” column. In the list displayed on the right, you need to find the “Windows Firewall” service.

By right-clicking and selecting “Properties” we get the firewall management window, where, as in the first point, two functions are important to us: a) launch type and b) state. Also, in the “Status” column, you need to stop the service, and in the “Startup type” column, disable it, so that this service no longer starts on the computer when you turn it on.

How to disable windows 7 firewall using command line

This advice will be useful to those users who know how to launch and work with command line. We launch the command processor (click “Start” -> “Search programs and files” and type “cmd”), and proceed as follows:

netsh firewall set opmode disable

2. to enable the firewall, type:

netsh firewall set opmode enable

This is a universal method for changing the firewall mode. But in more modern operating systems there is another way:

1. to disable the firewall, type:
netsh advfirewall set currentprofile state on

2. to disable the firewall, type:
netsh advfirewall set currentprofile state off

This method works without the need to reboot operating system, and is applicable to operating Windows systems, starting with Windows Vista.

Disable via Group Policy

The final and slightly exotic way to disable the firewall is to edit Group Policy. To launch the policy editor, click “Start” -> “Search programs and files” and type “gpedit.msc” and run the program. In the editor, go to the following path: “Computer Configuration” -> “Administrative Templates” -> “Network” -> “Network Connections” -> “Windows Firewall” and select the “Standard Profile” section.

In the content that opens, in the selected section, open for editing the parameter “Windows Firewall: Protect everyone network connections" and select "Disable". After making changes, you must restart your computer.

All the steps described are necessary in order to know how to disable the Windows 7 firewall. Sometimes you need to disable the firewall when working on the network and accessing various programs. The most frequently used programs that need access from local network, or the Internet is computer games. We have described several options for disabling the firewall, but you cannot disable it at all. This action may cause malware or viruses to enter your computer. For more effective protection, you must enable the firewall, but make changes to its configuration to open not all network ports for network access, but only those necessary for the game or any program!

This is a collection of hardware and software, designed to protect your computer from external cyber attacks. A personal firewall is indispensable when the user connects to

to the Internet directly. According to statistics, an unprotected computer is 100% likely to pick up a virus after just two minutes of session. It is difficult for an inexperienced user not only to understand how to disable the firewall, but even to distinguish a firewall from an antivirus, because both of these programs seem to be designed to protect the operating system. So, an antivirus protects your computer from the inside, scanning the system and deleting or isolating infected files. The firewall serves as a kind of filter for network packets coming from outside. Those packets that do not meet the specified parameters simply will not pass through the “wall”.

How to disable the firewall and what is it for?

Despite the fact that the native Windows firewall is quite reliable with the correct user settings, few people use it. The fact is that antiviruses that are installed on personal computers, are often supplied with the firewall. However, two firewalls on one device cannot function correctly; application conflict in these cases is a common occurrence. And here the uninitiated user has a question about how to disable the firewall. Let's look at the algorithm for disabling the firewall using the example of the most popular version of the operating system.

How to disable Windows 7 firewall?

1. Go to the following path: Start/Control Panel/Windows Firewall. Several windows will open before our eyes, each of which shows the status of the firewall; we need to set the status to “Disable” everywhere. However, before that, disconnect your current Internet connection.

2. After you have disabled the firewall itself, you need to disable the service responsible for launching the application. If this is not done, the firewall will start every time the system boots. How do I find a firewall service? To do this, in the “Control Panel” menu we find the “Administration” section, then “Services”, in the list presented we find the “Windows Firewall” item, set “Disable”. If you want to re-enable your personal firewall, then perform all the steps in the reverse order, that is, first start the service, and only then the firewall itself. Otherwise, pop-up errors cannot be avoided.

3. Remove the firewall from the startup list. To do this, click Start/Run/

msconfig/ Startup tab/ uncheck the box next to the corresponding program.

Choosing a reliable firewall

So, we have become familiar with what a firewall is and how to disable and enable it. Now you can find out which firewall will do the best job of protecting your computer. The well-deserved first place in the "Reliability" category today goes to ZoneAlarm Pro - a super-sophisticated firewall with many functions. However, if you don't need to store huge amounts of sensitive data, choose a simpler option, such as Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro or Comodo Personal Firewall Pro. These firewalls are light on system memory, have many useful factory settings, a user-friendly interface, and several operating modes.

And finally, what is a firewall and how to disable it on windows xp?

Firewall translated from English is a wall of fire. Which, by analogy, can be understood as a wall that prevents unwanted objects from getting inside something.

A firewall is a specialized utility program that prevents certain traffic from accessing your computer. A kind of guard dog that lets in its own people and doesn’t let in other people’s information objects.

You determine who is a stranger and who is yours by configuring the firewall parameters. People often ask questions like, what is a firewall and how to disable it on windows xp? Sometimes a standard configured firewall does not allow you to obtain the necessary information because the port is blocked. In this case, you either need to unblock the port in the same firewall settings, or disable the firewall altogether.

To disable the firewall, you need to go to the System and Security field in the Control Panel. Then, choose to enable or disable parameters windows firewall(this is the official name of the firewall). Then you check the appropriate boxes and confirm that you did all this consciously. That's it, you've fired your traffic guard.

A firewall is part of your computer’s virus security system, and correctly configuring its settings will allow you to surf the Internet calmly and safely.
