It often seems to inexperienced users that setting up a scanner or printer with certain parameters for printing is so vague and confusing that only a programmer can figure it out high level. In fact, setting up a scanner, color or black and white printer made by Canon (the most common models today are MF3010, MG3640, and all varieties of the Pixma model) is quite simple.

The entire installation takes no more than 15 minutes, and all pop-up menu windows are intuitive. Therefore, even a child can figure it out. But if there is still a possibility of making a mistake during installation or performing the wrong action, then detailed instructions for setting up will be given using the examples of the Canon MF3010, Canon Pixma MG3640 models.

The first steps in setting up printing through a color printer are to connect it to the network and directly to the computer. 1. Wait until the operating system loads completely;
2. Connect the USB cable;
3. Go online and visit official page your printer manufacturer (in our case, Canon);
4. In the search, you must type the exact numeric or letter code indicating the printer model;
5. Then you should select the type and bitness of your operating system from the list and put the driver for download;
6. After the required file has been completely copied to your computer, you need to launch it;
7. When the installation is complete, the system will prompt you to reboot - agree; if not, restart your computer manually;
8. After restarting the computer and starting all services, you need to go to the “Devices and Printers” section - this section is located in the computer control panel;
9. Find your color or black and white printer and right-click on the “Set as default” tab.

Set up Canon printer printing

Thanks to these settings, you will be able to make your printouts truly original. In addition, through the same tab you can control the order of document printing and manual printing.
• Open properties again by right-clicking on the desired device and select the appropriate item. After that, go to the “General” tab and click on the “Test Print” button. At the end, wait for the printed piece of paper.

Some possible problems and solutions

Often, users are faced with the fact that the program selects a completely different device when sending a document for printing. To solve this kind of problem, you need to set the newly configured device to “default”. In this case, the question may arise: where to find the settings for this? In this case, follow these steps:

• Open the section with printers and other devices installed on your personal computer.
• Find the icon for the desired printing device and open its context menu.
• In the list that opens, click on “Set as default”.

It also happens that users of printing office equipment, after completing the settings, are faced with the following problem: they could not save the printer settings. To fix this problem, first try printing a test page on your device - how to do this has already been described above. If all else fails, make sure that in the section with printing devices the icon of your device is actually displayed. If it is not there, then reinstall the drivers and reboot.

Another way to solve the described problem is to roll back the system to the date when your device printed in normal mode. You can even try, except the current one. The vast majority of modern printers do not require a special installation procedure in Windows XP. If you turn on the printer while working with the system, after connecting it to your computer, the operating system will detect it and make the necessary settings so that you can use it while working with Windows. To install a new printer, as well as to check and configure previously installed printers, you should open a special folder. All folders related to hardware and system settings are located in the folder Control Panel(Control Panel). By selecting the main command of the same name Windows menu XP, you will launch Explorer and open the corresponding folder. More details about working with this folder will be discussed below, but for now we note that there are two modes for viewing the contents of the folder - classic and Web viewing mode. The default is the second mode. In this mode, icons of the main groups of controls are displayed on the right side of the Explorer window. Click on the icon with the name Printers and other devices(Printers and Other Hardware) to get started with printers, scanners, digital cameras, keyboards, mice, gaming devices, and faxes. Icons appear in File Explorer indicating available tasks and various devices(Fig. 3.1). At the same time, links to other groups of controls will appear in the taskbar. You can start the printer installation procedure by clicking on the appropriate link, but it is better to first navigate to the folder containing a description of all printers and faxes installed on the system.

Click on the icon with the name Printers and faxes(Printers and Faxes) to go to the folder for working with this equipment. By the way, if you are using the classic view of the Control Panel, all the icons will appear on the right side of the Explorer window when you select the main menu command Control Panel(Control Panel). Double clicking on the icon will take you to the desired folder.

No matter how you open the desired folder, icons will appear on the right side of the Explorer window indicating all the printers installed on your computer. In addition, the folder contains a wizard icon that makes it easier to connect a new printer to the system. This folder may also contain fax icons, which will be discussed below. If none of the icons are selected, you will see a command to install a new printer in the taskbar. When you select the printer icon, commands for setting it up appear in the taskbar (Fig. 3.2).

The Windows XP system allows you to connect several printers to your computer, so there can also be several icons. If an icon with the name of your printer is present in the folder, then everything is fine and you can print to the printer from any program running under Windows control. If there is no such icon, then you need to complete the printer installation procedure. To facilitate this procedure, a special printer installation wizard is used. However, it should be noted that some printer manufacturers such as e.g. Hewlett Packard, supply their devices with a floppy disk or CD containing their own installation program software printer, without using a wizard Windows installations. Although you can use the wizard for such printers, in this case the printer support built into Windows system, and not offered by the printer manufacturer on the disc that is distributed with it.

To launch the Add Printer Wizard, double-click on the icon Installing the Printer(Add printer). The first dialogue of the wizard introduces you to the process and explains that this wizard will walk you step by step to install the printer (Fig. 3.3, left). Since you don't need to enter anything in this dialog, let's move straight to the next dialog. The transition to the second dialog is carried out by pressing the button Next(Next). The second dialog of the Printer Installation Wizard asks you to clarify whether the printer is connected directly to your computer or whether this printer is connected to a computer network, just like your computer (Figure 3.3).

If you want to connect network printer, you should read the section of our book regarding networking in Windows, or contact your network administrator for help. Now we will look at the option of directly connecting the printer to your computer. By checking the box in the dialog, you will give Windows command automatically find and install the printer. Click the button Next(Next) to continue working. If the printer is automatically detected and installed, you will skip the next few steps. If Windows was unable to connect the printer, the corresponding dialog will inform you about this (Fig. 3.3, right). In this case, you will need to manually specify all the necessary parameters, for which click the button Next(Next). The following wizard dialog will appear on the screen, prompting you to determine the port to which the printer is connected (Fig. 3.4, left). The same dialog will appear immediately after the second wizard dialog if you have not checked the box automatic search printer. Usually a standard printer port is used LPT1 or universal serial bus port USB. To make it easier, a standard connector is drawn in the dialogue, which is used to connect using the port LPT1,

Let's mark the port with the name FILE. It describes a virtual printer that may not actually be on the computer. If you install a printer, specifying that it is connected to this port, then when printing on such a printer, a special file will be created that you can transfer to another computer. If you have a printer installed on this computer, you can print it. This way you can, for example, print to a high-quality printer from a computer that does not have such a printer connected. In reality, the printing will be done in a completely different place.

Select the desired port by selecting it in the list, then click the button Next(Next) to continue the installation. After specifying the printer port, the next wizard dialog prompts you to select the printer model from the list (Fig. 3.4,). This dialog contains lists of printer manufacturers and models. Select your printer manufacturer from the list of manufacturers by clicking on it. Then, from the list of printers, select specific model printer.

If your printer is not on the list, then you should use the floppy disk or CD that should be included with your printer. In this case, click the button Install from disk(Have disk). A dialog for selecting the location where the drivers are located will appear on the screen (Fig. 3.4). You can enter the path in the input field, or you can click the button Review(Browse) to select the desired folder in the dialog that appears. After specifying the address of the driver supplied on the disk, you will be returned to the wizard. After specifying your printer model in one of the following ways, click Next(Next) to move to the next dialog.

In a new dialog, the wizard will ask you to select a name for the printer, and will also offer to use it as the default printer (Fig. 3.5). You can use any name as a name, but it is better to leave the name that the system offers you. If you have multiple printers connected to your computer, all programs will print to the default printer. Of course, you can change your default printer to another one at any time. Most likely, there is only one printer connected to your computer, so you do not need to enter anything in the dialog.

Click the button Next(Next), and you will go to the next dialog (Fig. 3.5). It specifies whether your printer will be used as a network printer. If your computer is on a network and other users will be printing to the printer, you should answer in the affirmative. In most cases the printer will not be shared.

The new printer is almost installed. All that remains is to check its operation by printing something on it. To do this, click the button Next(Next) and go to the next dialog of the Add Printer Wizard. A dialog box appears prompting you to print a test page to check. proper operation printer (Fig. 3.5). It is better to set the switch to the position that allows you to print a test page, after which you should press the button Next(Next) in the dialogue.

The last dialog of the wizard will appear on the screen, summarizing the work completed (Fig. 3.6). After this, be sure to check the printer. It must be connected to the computer, turned on, and loaded with clean paper. When the printer is ready to use, press the button Ready(Ready) to complete the wizard and install the printer on your system.

The master will finish the work, necessary drivers will be installed, after which the printer will begin printing a test page. The print test page is designed to demonstrate that the printer can run in Windows and to provide a visual check of the printer's print quality. In addition, various technical information related to your printer settings (Fig. 3.6).

Once the test page has been sent to print, a dialog box will appear asking you if the test page has printed correctly (Figure 3.6). If you can read the printed text on the test page and there are no printing defects visible, click OK on this dialog to close it. Another icon will appear in the Printers and Faxes folder with the name of the connected printer. Now that the printer is connected, it is already configured by default, and for most cases this setting is sufficient. However, sometimes it is necessary to change the printer settings. To do this, select the printer icon by clicking on it and select the link in the taskbar Printing settings(Select printing preferences).

A printer settings dialog with several tabs will appear on the screen (Fig. 3.7). Appearance settings dialog varies greatly for different types printers, but among the parameters, most likely, there will be several mandatory ones. On the first tab of the dialog (Fig. 3.7), the orientation of the sheet of paper is set, that is, it is determined how the printing will proceed - along the short or along the long side of the sheet of paper. From the list, you can choose to print multiple pages of a document on one sheet of paper. This is often used to save paper when printing drafts. Naturally, page sizes will be greatly reduced. You can also set the printing order of multi-page documents from beginning to end or vice versa. Changing the print order on some printers makes it easier to assemble the sheets in the correct sequence.

On the second tab of the dialog (Fig. 3.7), print quality is adjusted and paper is selected. Sets the print resolution, which determines the quality of the resulting prints. Typically this parameter contains the number of dots printed on a one-inch piece of paper. The higher this value, the higher the print quality. Sometimes this parameter is replaced with a verbal description of print quality. High average, low quality is set, and no numbers are used. Most printers have multiple paper sources, such as sheet paper and envelopes. The list located in the dialog determines where the paper will come from when printing. For some printers, you can select the type of paper to use. If your printer supports color printing, you can choose between black and white or color printing.

For more complex printer settings, click the button Additionally(Advanced). This will open a settings dialog that allows you to change absolutely all the printing parameters that can be configured in this printer model. However, in most cases this setting will not be necessary.

Additional capabilities for working with some printers are provided using special programs, links to which are located on a separate dialog tab (Fig. 3.7). Using these programs, you can, for example, check the functionality of the printer and, in some cases, restore it. Once you have configured all the settings, click OK in the dialog to close it. It should be noted that settings changes made in the described way will apply when using the printer in all programs. If, while working with some program, you change the current printer settings by going to the settings from the print dialog, the changes will only take effect when printing from this program and will be canceled when you finish working with the program. The next time you start the program, the print settings will be the same again.

The printer has long become an integral part of not only office everyday life, but also one of the elements of home office equipment. Whatever you say, it’s difficult to do without a printer now, because working with papers takes place in the lives of each of us. However, sometimes users have problems during setup. How to set up a printer on your computer, avoiding common mistakes, read this article.

Connecting a local printer using a disk

The first step is to connect the printer to your computer via a USB port. Next, go to “Start”, select “Devices and Printers”, and in the window that opens, click “Add a printer”. After this, the window will change to another one, in which you should select “Add a local printer”.

Then you should check the box next to the line “Use an existing port” and select USB from the list provided.

Next you will need to install printer drivers. As usually happens, the ones you need are not on the existing list. In this case, you need to click “Install drivers from disk” and specify the path where the system can download them. “Firewood” can be found on the disk that came with the device itself, or you can download it on the Internet. Please note that printer drivers can be downloaded for free, but if all sites require a download fee, go to the manufacturer’s official website and download the necessary information.

The next step is to enter the name of the printer in the required line (or leave everything as is), accordingly, under this name it will appear on your computer.

Click “Next” and wait for the installation to complete. After this, check the printer's functionality. Run any document through and try to print.

Data location

In order to check the settings of the installed printer, you should go to a special folder located in the Control Panel. Content can be viewed in classic view or in web view. Unless you choose otherwise, the second option is used. When you get inside the folder, you will see the “Printers and other devices” icon, click on it, and work with printers, scanners, mouse, keyboard, in a word, with everything external devices connected to your computer. In the process, you can change the data, in a word, do whatever you think is necessary.
