Design

I will not describe the appearance of the smartphone in detail, since I already did this in the presentation of the smartphone. You can evaluate the design and location of the main elements yourself from the photo below.

However, there are still a few words about convenience and ergonomics. By standards modern phones P70 is a bit thick. Using a branded case thickens the gadget even more. However, the device feels good in the hand. The back surface is slippery (without a case), but not so slippery that the smartphone could slip out of your hand.

The battery cover is easily scratched if not handled very carefully. This is due to journalists who test devices according to the principle: “It’s not mine, it’s not a pity.” The result can be seen in the photo.

Taken together, the materials and design don't provide any unusual user experience. The P70 is far from an elegant design solution. But nothing negative can be said either. A simple, solid, sometimes boring block of plastic.

The touch buttons are illuminated in the dark, but weakly. And yet this is already something.

A little about the display. There is a 5-inch (127 mm) IPS screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The pixel density is 294 ppi and individual pixels will be difficult to make out. If you manage to do this, then you can congratulate yourself on your excellent vision.

In the photo below, under high magnification, you can look at the screen of the Sony Xperia Z3 with its 5.2-inch Full HD display (423 ppi) and the Lenovo P70 (on the right). In everyday use there is little difference.

Viewing angles are traditionally good for IPS matrices. There are no exceptions here.

The technical characteristics of the Lenovo P70 are of considerable importance. It's far from budget, but it's not the latest, hottest hardware either. In general, let's look at the specifications:

There is something special to say about the network capabilities of the device. The Wi-Fi module could catch the network signal better. Where other devices show reliable reception, the P70 notes a lower signal level. The 4G device connects well for the most part, but a couple of times I noticed that for no apparent reason the data transmission disappeared. The symptom was treated with a simple reboot.

Overall performance is very good. The interface and animation fly everywhere in the system. Not a single lag or the slightest slowdown was noticed. Screenshots with test results of popular benchmarks (AnTuTu, Vellamo, Geekbench 3) in their rightful place.

In toys, the device did not perform at its best. It was not possible to play Dungeon Hunter 5 normally. At first, the device froze right at the beginning of the mission, the second time near the end, and the third time - already when launching the application. It was decided to suspend further attempts due to their futility.

Dead Trigger 2 refused to launch on the phone at all.

With Asphalt 8 everything is much better. The game starts and runs without problems at maximum graphics settings. The same can be said about Crossy Road. Everything is great with simple toys.

A little more about hardware issues. I didn't like the work of the light sensor. It quickly changes the screen brightness depending on the surrounding light, there are no errors here. However, in most cases the brightness is not enough. Literally one division more and it would be much more comfortable to work with the device. Sometimes I couldn’t stand it and turned off auto-adjustment completely.

In general, the maximum screen brightness is not amazing. There are smartphones with much more serious backlighting, but this certainly cannot be considered a disadvantage of the device.

Photo capabilities

The main camera is the biggest disappointment of the phone. Photos are cloudy, focus works very well, and the HDR mode is so harsh that the end result is something between a real-life photo and a comic book.

There are a lot of different modes and additional settings shooting. However, they are unlikely to be useful to anyone when the quality of the source material leaves much to be desired.

The smartphone records video in 3GP format at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The quality is no better than photographs, but I will still give an example of a video.

Working with SIM cards

The phone supports two SIM cards at once. The setting takes place through the corresponding menu item. Here you can set a request to select a SIM card before each call or send an SMS, or you can distribute tasks for each card once and for all.

Ring tones, of course, are also set for each SIM individually.

Chips

You can find some very interesting items on the menu. Firstly, it is very convenient to wake up the screen by simply tapping it twice on its surface. The screen wakes up but remains locked. Enough to see the time or new notifications.

Secondly, double-clicking the “House” icon even in sleep mode takes a snapshot. Sometimes this function can be very useful and we often regret its absence when a good shot is already gone. However, there is a nuance: photography occurs even before the camera has time to focus, so such pictures often turn out blurry.

Locking the screen by shaking the device did not catch on in my case, since the system often blocked the screen at the wrong moment.

In addition, the phone allows standard means configure different scenarios for its use depending on the time of day or what is captured in a given location Wi-Fi networks. A very convenient thing if everyday life is subject to the same schedule.

Battery life

The Lenovo P70 battery is perhaps the most interesting feature of the smartphone. Yes, there is a seemingly gigantic 4000 mAh battery installed here, but you shouldn’t expect that the device can work on one charge for two, three or four days in a row. In fact, the phone can confidently survive for about a day and a half under heavy load (calls, games, Internet, background notifications, plus all activated wireless interfaces).

Let's put it this way: where competitors with similar hardware with their standard +/- 3000 mAh last a day, the P70 lasts half a day more. And so it is in everything. With moderate use (a few calls and background notifications via 4G or Wi-Fi), the smartphone will easily survive three days, but this is the ceiling.

All this data is valid when the “smart battery saving” function is activated. In this case, energy consumption is slightly reduced by reducing the frequency of operation of the video accelerator and the backlight level.

There is also an emergency battery mode, in which the desktop interface is simplified, and the phone becomes similar to the Nokia 3100: only calls, SMS and an alarm clock are available.

In the end, if an extra half-day of battery life is important to you, then the P70 is for you. If not, then the battery capacity of 4000 mAh is not competitive advantage devices.

The time to fully charge a smartphone is approximately 3 hours, and with a few minutes of charging, the device can be recharged for conversations for 4 hours. This is not some proprietary technology like Samsung's Quick Charge. The output voltage on the power supply is simply increased to 5.2 volts.

A lot for a phone that has a below-average camera quality, a discreet, unremarkable design and a non-Full HD screen. The hero of today's article has good, but not the best hardware. It's strange, but there are compatibility problems with some modern toys. I think these are temporary inconveniences that will most likely be eliminated in subsequent firmware.

A higher capacity battery actually provides very little benefit. The only thing that deserves praise is the equipment. Lenovo approached this issue with full responsibility. However, this is just a nice bonus and is not at all an argument in favor of buying the phone.

The appearance of the Lenovo P70, in our opinion, cannot be called attractive; even the Lenovo P780 with its metal back looked more interesting. The P70 model has an angular body with rounded side edges. There are speakers on the bottom edge of the device, although the right speaker does not produce any sound. Rear panel The phone collects fingerprints, although it is not glossy. The device fits well in the hand, but its corners noticeably rest in the palm.

The P70 phone is equipped with a 5-inch IPS display with HD resolution (1280x720 pixels). The pixel density is 294 per inch, which is clear enough for a 5-inch diagonal. The value is not much lower than the iPhone 6 or their Retina displays.

The maximum brightness of the display turned out to be high - up to 462 cd/m2, with a reserve for a bright sunny day. The minimum brightness of the white background is 17 cd/m2, which is bright if you use the smartphone in the dark. The display has auto brightness, but it does not have smooth adjustment. We checked its operation - it quickly works in the direction of increasing the brightness, but when it is necessary to dim the brightness, the display does not work immediately. In the sun, reading from the display was difficult, but not critical; in general, the image remained readable. The viewing angles of the Lenovo P70 display are not maximum, but they are wide enough for comfortable work with a smartphone.

The display turned out to be very easily soiled - during tests the screen collected fingerprints. The smartphone does not have a glove mode or color settings. In our opinion, the latter feature would be nice - the colors look loud, especially on the proposed lock screens.

Camera

The Lenovo P70 has good cameras for a mid-priced smartphone: a 13 MP main camera and a 5 MP front camera. The main camera is equipped with an LED flash, autofocus, HDR mode, 3D model shooting mode, face and smile detection, the ability to shoot panoramas and much more. Compared to the top-end Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro, there is less different modes and settings, although it is possible to adjust sharpness, saturation, hue, etc. The camera interface can be called simple and intuitive, you won’t have to search for the necessary settings for a long time.

The maximum photo resolution is 4160×3120 pixels. The camera shoots Full HD video at 30 frames per second. When recording video, we did not detect autofocus tracking. Audio is recorded in stereo.

The quality of photos is low for a camera with 13 MP; the same Huawei Honor 6 or Lenovo Vibe X2 take better photos. Autofocus does not always work clearly the first time; it is advisable to take several shots. The camera does not handle uneven lighting very well; many objects in the photo are overexposed. In such cases, you can resort to the HDR mode (to improve the detail of the shadowed and highlighted areas of the frame). In poor lighting, the camera starts to make a lot of noise. In terms of detail and sharpness, it is inferior to many cameras. You will be able to “grasp” and capture a specific detail, but at the cost of uneven sharpness across the frame. You can take a good shot only with uniform lighting, and not always on the first try.

The 5 MP front camera of the phone is here, rather, not for video calling, but for selfies. The camera does not have autofocus or flash. The front camera shoots video in 640x480 resolution at 30 frames per second. You can take selfies in “Portrait” mode with “decoration” of the face or effects, such as sepia. Overall, the front camera does its job well.

Working with text - 3.0

As a rule, Lenovo smartphones have a standard Google keyboard, even top models. On the Lenovo P70 phone, manufacturers also limited themselves to a regular keyboard. Overall, Google's keyboard is good. When typing, you can use continuous text input (Swype) and switch between languages ​​using a separate key. Note that there are no markings of additional symbols on the icons, but you can enter numbers from the top row of keys. The audio player plays popular MP3 and AAC formats, as well as WAV, but does not play AC3, WMAV2 and FLAC (the latter can be launched through the file manager). The smartphone comes pre-installed with standard applications for video and audio, for example, Google Play Music, which cannot be called the most convenient.

Sound quality is generally average. The Lenovo P70 did not come with headphones.

Battery - 4.2

Battery life is perhaps the main advantage of a smartphone. Lenovo P70 is equipped battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. In “medium” intensity mode (checking email, Wi-Fi on, about an hour of games a day, watching one movie, a couple of calls, browsing, listening to music on headphones), the smartphone lasted us 2-2.5 days. If you enable energy saving modes and set the brightness lower, you can easily get about three days of operation - the result is impressive.

Performance - 3.1

The device uses the new eight-core 64-bit MediaTek MT6752 platform - all cores operate at frequencies up to 1.7 GHz. The Mali-T760MP2 is responsible for the graphics, the volume RAM- 2 GB. Smartphone performance on high level-in our tests, the smartphone handled benchmarks and most heavy games perfectly.

The Lenovo P70 runs fast with built-in apps and more. You will be able to actively “surf” the Internet with several open tabs. We just note that the camera could load faster. A smartphone can be considered as gaming platform, but the “filling” is not optimized for all games. Thus, the games NOVA 3, Dead Trigger, Modern Combat 5 or Minion Rush run smoothly on a smartphone. The same cannot be said about Asphalt 8, which slows down at high settings. However, you can also play it, albeit with minor difficulties.

In benchmarks, the Lenovo P70 smartphone showed good results, not much lower than the 2014 flagships. In the AnTuTu benchmark, it received scores comparable to those of the Sony Xpeira Z3 Compact - 44325 points. Ice Storm Unlimited from 3DMark is slightly lower - an average of 10860 points, almost like Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

We should start talking about the screen with the picture improvements provided by proprietary MediaTek technologies. One of them - ClearMotion - is responsible for increasing the frame rate in real time in the playing video (from 24-30 per second to 60). This significantly improves the smoothness of the picture display, although it looks rather unusual.

Another technology - MiraVision - when displaying photos and videos, adjusts the saturation, brightness and contrast of the picture, achieving its maximum quality. It also saves battery power at the same time. This is achieved by automatically adjusting the intensity of the display backlight (depending on the lighting) and the color gamut of the content displayed on the screen. Usually in the settings of smartphones there are special items dedicated to ClearMotion and MiraVision, but we could not find such settings in this device - it is assumed that they work without user intervention.

The diagonal of the Lenovo P70 display, made using TFT IPS technology, is five inches. Despite the fact that the resolution is 1280x720 pixels (HD), individual pixels are almost impossible to see with the naked eye. The display recognizes up to five simultaneous touches.

The matrix deserves all praise: the image is bright, rich, contrasty, with correct color rendition. The viewing angles are maximum: the picture is not distorted and does not even fade at any angle. Safety glass It is equipped with an oleophobic coating, thanks to which fingerprints can be removed even by simply carrying the smartphone in your pocket.

Lenovo has also redesigned other standard applications - like Explorer, a clock or a dialer - in the style of its proprietary interface. But the manufacturer did not touch the keyboard - it has a standard appearance for “pure” Android.

It is worth noting a large number of third-party pre-installed applications - these include social network clients, office programs, and games of various genres. Lenovo has done everything so that the majority of buyers of its brainchild can start using the device without downloading and installing additional programs from Play. In addition, most of these applications can be deleted if they are no longer needed, so their presence should not be a problem for advanced users.

Another unusual decision by the manufacturer was the use of two “ecosystems” in the smartphone at once, from Google and from Yandex. Because of this, many applications duplicate each other in functionality - for example, “Maps” and “Yandex.Maps”, Chrome browsers and Yandex. Of course, each company has its own unique services (for example, YouTube for Google and Taxi for Yandex), but such an abundance can confuse the user.

The device in operation

The Lenovo P70 is powered by an eight-core chipset from MediaTek, model MT6752. It is built on 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz, and is paired with an ARM Mali-T760 MP2 700 MHz graphics accelerator. The smartphone's RAM capacity is 2 GB.

According to MediaTek, this chipset was developed “for upper-mid segment smartphones” and was the first built on Cortex-A53 cores. What is the use of this for the average user? It turns out that the 64-bit ARMv8 architecture has much greater energy efficiency and performance compared to the 32-bit ARMv7. Thanks to this, the interface works smoother, applications are more responsive, resource-demanding 3D games and players practically do not crash when playing 4K videos. Combined with resource-saving HD screen resolution, this allowed the Lenovo P70 to demonstrate very high performance at the level of current top smartphones.

This is confirmed by the benchmark results: in AnTuTu the gadget scored 44488 points, and in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited it received 10955 points.

In addition, the new chipset from MediaTek in the near future (after updating to Android 5.0) will allow the smartphone to make maximum use of the capabilities inherent in Android Lollipop, because this OS is optimized to work with 64-bit processors. Android 5.0 uses a new framework ( virtual machine), where Android applications run. Thanks to this, launching applications and switching between them is faster, and the system becomes more energy efficient.

In real tasks, I never encountered a lack of performance. The Lenovo P70 copes well with HD video playback (nominally the processor supports playback of videos even in 4K resolution), web surfing on busy sites, and 3D games.

As for the latter, you can play even the most demanding titles on the device without any problems. There were no slowdowns noted either in Asphalt 8: Airborn or in the runner Minion Rush (as you know, the developers of this game did not pay enough attention to optimization, so in many devices even in the mid-range segment you can encounter lags).

Returning to the MediaTek chipset, let's mention one more potential advantage. With the ability to handle very large numbers, the 64-bit architecture allows for more advanced and complex encryption. This can be useful both for those who deal with highly confidential data and for a much larger number of consumers accustomed to making online purchases: a smartphone built on a chipset with 64-bit architecture will be ready to support the most advanced means of protecting transactions and personal data.

The smartphone has 16 GB of internal memory, but due to the abundance of pre-installed applications, only 10.5 GB is available to the user after a hard reset. However, this should not be a problem, since Lenovo P70 supports cards microSD memory, and is also equipped with a USB host, to which, using USB cable OTG allows you to connect external drives (as well as peripheral devices).

The device has only one speaker, but it turned out to be surprisingly loud. The Lenovo P70 ringtone can be heard even when on a noisy street, and music from a smartphone can be heard in any corner of the apartment.

The camera application in Lenovo P70 opens quickly - 1.5 seconds, and the smartphone is ready to shoot. Even in daylight, photos show a lack of clarity and color saturation (the camera does a good job with automatic white balance), and indoor photos are often blurry. Sometimes the problem of lack of illumination can be solved by a flash, but, nevertheless, the overall quality will satisfy only the most undemanding users. But the gadget copes with documents without problems: the text is clear and clearly legible. Thanks to the 5 MP front sensor, the device is quite suitable for taking selfies, but, again, when taking pictures, you should take care of sufficiently good lighting.

The quality of video recording on the Lenovo P70 is also a compromise: the videos do not have the twitchiness typical of cheap smartphones, but the image clarity is not ideal.

Wireless interfaces

Lenovo P70 supports simultaneous operation with two SIM cards, like most modern smartphones - in alternating (DSDS) mode. Another advantage of the smartphone is Quick Charge technology, available thanks to the MediaTek MT6752 chipset. It allows you to fully charge the battery in just three hours - for battery capacity of this smartphone it's very fast.

Even with fairly intensive use, including calls, several hours of web surfing, launching various programs and a few games, the Lenovo P70 is capable of working for at least two days. If you save battery power even by standard means (giving up games, videos and background synchronization), battery life can be increased to about 3-4 days.

To maximize battery life on your smartphone, you can activate an "emergency mode" that disables all background processes, allows you to run only a few programs, including the dialer and messages, and changes the screen colors to shades of gray (although this doesn't make sense on an IPS display) .

The results of testing autonomy under continuous loads also turned out to be very decent: four hours in resource-demanding games and more than 10 hours when watching videos at medium brightness.

Results

The only significant drawback of the new Lenovo smartphone is the main camera. Therefore, the device cannot be recommended for those who take a lot of photographs. For everyone else, the Lenovo P70-A becomes one of the best offers on the market in terms of the balance between hardware power and battery life. Agree, it’s rare to see a smartphone with a 64-bit eight-core processor (which can handle all modern games and supports fast charging technology) and a battery that lasts for two days of fairly active use of the device. Let's not forget about the set of accessories included, and about working with two SIM cards. At the same time, the Lenovo P70 has a very affordable price of 19,990 rubles, which looks especially attractive against the backdrop of currency fluctuations.
