Why does the printer not accept photo paper. What to do if the printer stops picking up paper. Check the manual operation mode, for this you need

Hello dear friends.

Today I will tell you about one of the most common paper feed problems in printers and copiers, and we will also analyze how to find out the reason why the printer does not take paper, and how to fix this problem. This article is relevant for Hewlett Packard, Canon, Epson, Samsung, Xerox, Brother printers and copiers.

So, as you know, nothing lasts forever in this world, unfortunately this rule is also true for printing technology.

There are three most common reasons why the printer stopped taking paper, these are wear, contamination and loss of elasticity on the surface of the printer's paper pickup roller (also called the paper feed roller).

Picture 1

Let's take a closer look at the three options listed above:

    Roller wear. The paper pick-up roller has a rough surface that picks up the paper when the roller is turned. And of course, with each new printed sheet, the surface of the roller wears out. As a rule, the shaft life is about 50 thousand prints and can be greatly reduced when using low-quality paper or if toner spills from the cartridge onto the roller, it can even be said that the toner has a more negative effect on the surface of the roller. You can determine the wear of the roller visually; its surface, which has direct contact with the paper, will be noticeably more worn.

    If the roller surface is worn, there are several options for extending the life of the roller:

    • move the roller by turning around its axis on the plastic shaft guide so that the worn and normal surfaces of the rubber roller are reversed.

      remove the rubber roller from the plastic guide, wrap the plastic guide with adhesive tape or electrical tape (no more than a few turns) so that its diameter increases by no more than 1-1.5 mm, then return the rubber roller to its place. It should be noted that the method with a thickening of the diameter does not always work, but it still works, it has been tested on personal experience. Also, do not forget that both of the above methods are a temporary measure, in case of wear on the surface of the rubber roller, it is definitely better to replace it with a new one.

    Roller contamination paper grip. The surface of the roller can become dirty from paper and household dust, toner and ink deposits, and from the toner itself. AT this case everything is much simpler, to solve this problem we only need Platenclene - a cleaner that restores rubber surfaces (to replace normal fit gasoline for lighters, which in its properties is not worse than Platenclene liquid) and light-colored rags, which must not leave lint.

    Wet a cloth with cleaning fluid. And with a damp rag we clean the surface of the roller until traces of dirt from the roller no longer appear on the rags (this is exactly why the rag should be light).

    Loss of elasticity. Over time, the rubber loses its properties, and ceases to be soft (dube) and, accordingly, the roller cannot capture the paper.

Solving the problem in the same way as in the second case, if it does not help, then only replace the roller.

This problem is quite simple to solve on your own, the main thing is a little attention and you will succeed.

Replacing the Paper Feed Roller

Consider the issue of replacing the paper feed roller using the Xerox 3117 printer as an example.

Of course, this article only covers problems with the paper pick roller and does not cover all paper feed problems.

I wish your equipment breaks down less. Good luck.

A very common problem is when, after sending a document for printing, MFPs and printers do not pick up paper. This periodically occurs with both laser and inkjet devices, various models of hp, epson, samsung and others. To get rid of problems of this kind, you first need to determine the cause of their occurrence. Often the problem is associated with minor software failures, the use of paper of the wrong quality, the wear of the rollers over time, and the ingress of various objects into the printer. Such problems are eliminated, as a rule, very simply, with their own hands, without the help of specialists.

You should start checking the printer by assessing its performance and the presence of software failures. It is immediately necessary to find out whether roller rotation. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • turn on the device;
  • after waiting for the time of its preparation for work, the green indicator should light up;
  • then send the document for printing, and there will be a sound caused by the movement of the carriage, the rotation of the axis;
  • if everything is fine, then the sheets should be printed, there were no software failures, the mechanism is operational.

Paper pick rollers

When, after connecting to the network and pressing the power button on a xerox, brother, canon or any other model printer, the corresponding indicator does not light up, it is better to contact specialists.

The same should be done in the absence of practical experience in the repair of such equipment.

Also, you will need to resort to the help of service center professionals if, after sending to print rollers and carriage do not move. But first, you can try to reset the settings to eliminate the possibility of a software failure. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • turn on the printing device until it is fully ready for operation;
  • completely turn off the power by disconnecting the appropriate cord;
  • wait about 15 seconds;
  • connect the cord in place;
  • power is supplied, while the printer should work automatically, if this does not happen, press the appropriate button;
  • print a test document using the control panel or by pressing the button of your choice for 4 seconds (this does not work on all models).

If the parts (roller, carriage) start to move and the verification document is printed, then you can work on. The cause of the problem in this case was caused by a failure in the control program. When everything works, and the paper does not enter at all or the sheets are only half taken, then the cause should be sought by further checking.

Paper check

Another common reason for the printer not picking up paper is low quality last. To troubleshoot in this case, proceed as follows:

  • the previously inserted sheets are taken out of the tray;

  • remove wrinkled and damaged;

  • check the conformity of the paper in terms of size and density (is 80 g / m²);
  • align 20 sheets by tapping their edges on the table;

  • load the pack into the tray until it stops, adjusting its position with guides;
  • send a test file for printing.

If the document printed normally, then the reason is found, you can continue to work in the usual mode. If unsuccessful, other possible problems should be considered.

Checking the rollers and cleaning them

With constant use of the printer, the rollers wear out or become dirty, the feed mechanism begins to malfunction. cleaning do according to the following algorithm:

  • disconnect the printer from the power supply;
  • if the rollers are available, then they are wiped with a cloth dipped in clean (distilled or filtered) water, and when it is problematic to get to them, cotton swabs are used for cleaning;

  • after the procedure, the printer is assembled and power is connected to it;
  • then make a test printout.

If the sheet feed does not start, the process can be repeated again.

Alcohol is not recommended for wiping rollers. Water from moistened sticks must be squeezed well.

In case of repeated failure, it is necessary to process rollers with a composition that increases elasticity This should help for a while. All work should be done as with normal decontamination, but with a recovery fluid. There are products on the market that perform the function of cleaning and restoring at the same time. Their use will reduce the time of the entire procedure.

Rubber Roller Cleaner Platen Cleaner

Roller wear is the most problematic case. In this case, the way out of the situation is to replace them. You can independently try 2 ways to extend the life of the rollers:

  • turn them over so that the less worn areas take the place of the more damaged ones;

  • remove the rollers and wrap them with tape or tape to insulate electrical connections.

The first option is possible due to the uneven load on the parts during operation, which causes the parts facing the tray to wear out faster. Opposite sections remain intact. If the diameter of the roller is increased by winding it, then it is enough to make a maximum of 3 turns and install this part in place.

The considered methods can extend the possibility of using the equipment for some time, but after a while it will be necessary to make a replacement.

It should be noted that after such manipulations, the print quality often decreases. If you carry out the replacement yourself, then this will save.

Foreign objects inside

One of the possible reasons that the printer does not pick up paper, or does it poorly, may be that foreign objects have entered the device. To get them, do this:

  • turn off the power supply of the printing equipment;
  • remove paper and remove, if possible, the input tray and output tray;
  • take out a cartridge in a laser printer;
  • opening all covers, inspect the device for the presence of foreign objects, and if detected, remove them;

  • assemble the printer;
  • insert paper into the tray (20 sheets are enough);
  • turn on the device;
  • print test text.

The problem can also be caused by ingestion small pieces of paper. If fragments are found, be sure to remove them. In the event that an unsatisfactory result is obtained, further repair work is required.

Driver setting

Printer or multifunction device does not take paper even if the settings of the drivers responsible for printing documents are changed. The procedure to fix the problem in this case is as follows:

  • opening any text file, enter the print window;
  • there select the device to be used;
  • using the "Functions" tab, set the type of paper used, sheet sizes;

  • save the changes made;
  • perform a test print of the selected document.

In addition to the issues discussed above, there are others. Please note that if you insert photo paper into the tray, and set its normal type in the print window, the feed mechanism may also work intermittently. It often happens that some parts break and need to be replaced. Also, sheets are not automatically captured when the manual feed option or the corresponding button is pressed. This is remedied by selecting the appropriate feed mode from the print window menu. The options given are the most typical. If the problem remains after all the operations performed, then the only way out is to contact the service center.

The essence of this problem is that Canon printer does not pick up paper that is on this moment is in its main tray during printing. In addition, it often happens that the device starts to make sounds reminiscent of a similar noise during normal printing, but, oddly enough, sheets of paper for some reason do not pass through it.

How can we fix such a problem? To solve the problem that appeared with the printer, you need to follow the tips and tricks that we will cover in this article. But, before you follow all our advice, it will be necessary to print as a self-test report, and you can check in this way whether the problem has already been fixed.

How to print a self-test report: To do this, you need to load white, unused paper, the recommended type is the most common paper for A4 printers. First put the printer on its usual place. After that, press the power button and hold it for a few seconds. Without releasing your finger, simultaneously press the "Cancel /" Cancel button, hold it for a few more seconds, and then release both buttons. If the report turned out to be correct, you can be sure that everything is in order with the printer and therefore you do not need to worry and do not take the next steps, but if something is wrong with the print, then you need to follow our further recommendations and tips.

The self-test report will be sent to print. You must try to print a report after each operation in this article, even if it helped you find a device problem. The first solution to understand why the Canon printer is not picking up paper is: Performing a hardware reset If the printer is not picking up paper, then it makes sense to try resetting it.
Step 1. You need to press the button to turn on the device in this way; Without turning off the printer, you need to disconnect the power cable from the connector located on the back of the device; The power cable must also be unplugged from the electrical outlet; You need to wait about 15 seconds; You should reconnect the power cable: plug the plug and socket, and the other end into the corresponding connector located on the rear panel; If the printer does not automatically turn on after these actions, then you must press the button to turn it on.

Step 2. You need to make sure that the operation performed helped or the printer still does not pick up paper from the tray. To do this, you need to print a self-test report. Instructions on how to do this are given at the beginning of the article. The following options are available: The report prints successfully. If this is the case, then you should try to print the original document. If there are no problems here either, it means that the device was repaired successfully and the further actions described below should be abandoned; If you can't print the original file, then you should try the following solution to help resolve the issue; If the self-test report does not print, then you also need to go to the next solution. Second decision. Monitor paper status and try to reload it.
The problem when the Canon printer does not capture paper may well be related to the quality of the sheets themselves loaded into it. The device may refuse to accept them if they are wrinkled, dirty or dusty, or have significant deformations. Also this problem may be related to the quality of the paper itself. For printing, you need to purchase only good quality sheets that meet all the requirements of Canon printers. To check the paper status when the Canon printer does not pick up paper, try the following steps. If you want to check why a Canon printer won't pick up paper, start by placing a stack of 10-25 blank and white sheets in its tray.

Why won't my Canon printer pick up paper?

Remove the sheets from the tray; Inspect the interior of the tray by lighting dark areas with a flashlight. In the course of such an examination, you need to make sure that there are no obstacles that would prevent the rollers from engaging the sheets. Even if small pieces of paper get caught in the mechanism, it may cause paper feed problems and therefore inability to print. If you find any objects in the path that can interfere with the passage of paper, then you will need to clean the rollers (the sequence of this procedure is described in the appropriate section). Check the condition of the sheets themselves: the printer may not pick up paper due to problems with it. Wrinkled, deformed or torn sheets should be removed and replaced with normal ones;

Make sure the paper tray contains the same type and size of paper. Most devices can only process one type of paper at a time; Align the edges of the stack of sheets; Make sure that the number of sheets in the machine does not exceed 10-25. The printer may be having difficulty picking up or not picking up paper due to too much paper. Note. To perform all the described operations, you should load sheets in the amount of 10-25 pieces into the device. If the problem is solved, then in the future it is necessary to load the amount of paper that does not exceed the capacity of a particular device.

Printing equipment is essential today, and not only in offices and companies where the preparation of important documentation is part of the work of employees. But what about situations when the printer refuses to work in normal mode? Is it always worth calling the wizard in order to solve the problem?

One of the problems that you can try to solve yourself is the situation when the printer refuses to pick up paper from the tray or grabs it, but not in the way it should be. First you need to find out what the reason is, after which it will be easier to fix the problem.

Why won't my HP printer pick up paper?

The main reasons for the printer to stop picking up paper are:

  • There is no paper.
  • Manual feed mode is on.
  • The paper guide is not positioned correctly.
  • Too rough or damp, wrinkled paper.
  • A torn sheet in a pile of paper.
  • Pickup roller damaged.
  • The paper has the wrong grain direction.

The reason may be software failure, in this case the printer does not pick up the paper. You can fix the software failure by simply rebooting the device. To do this, turn on the printer and wait until it boots up, and then unplug the rear power cord. If the printer is connected to a separate power supply, turn it off as well.

If the laser printer does not pick up paper, keep it turned off for 15 seconds and then reconnect it. After that, the device should turn on automatically, but if this does not happen, press the power button. Next, you can try to print any document and check the health of the equipment. If the printer still does not print, go to the next step.

foreign objects

Sometimes staples, pieces of cloth, and other foreign objects get caught in the machine. This happens especially often in an office where dozens of people use the printer, who are not always careful in handling equipment. Foreign objects may temporarily block the operation of the printer or even disable it.

Turn off the device. Check the paper tray and clean if necessary. Then open the lid. If you are using a laser printer, remove the cartridge. Carefully inspect the device inside, and if you find foreign objects, remove them. Then replace the cartridge, close all covers, put paper in the tray, plug in the machine, and try to print something.

Paper feed unit problems

It also happens that all the above actions and even replacing or cleaning the roller does not give any results. The thing is that the paper feed units are worn out. For example, over time, the metal bar on the brake pad begins to move away from the printer, play appears in the bushing of the paper pickup roller, or the tray fasteners wear out. The result is a gap of a couple of millimeters. This is enough for the display to “pop up an error or the printer stops picking up paper.

How to deal with such failures? There are several options:

  1. Someone changes the tray mounts in places or puts new ones;
  2. Others deepen them a little by placing a toothpick or a piece of plastic;
  3. If there is no metal bar on the brake pad, then it is replaced with strips of metallized adhesive tape;
  4. Metallized tape will also help if there is play in the sleeve. To do this, a couple of skeins of metallized adhesive tape are made around its base (in the direction of the coupling!) Then some lubricant is added. The main thing is not to overdo it with the amount of tape. Otherwise, during operation, the paper pick-up clutch will crack or stop functioning altogether.
  5. By the way, printers have another “sore. They often have a dirty paper sensor. Its task is to adjust and control the position of the flag, which rises when the sheet passes. Naturally, a jam occurs and subsequent paper feed is no longer possible.

HP printer does not pick up paper - how to fix the problem?

Most often, the following methods can be effective when the printer does not pick up paper:

  • try printing on a different paper;
  • inspect the roller to see if it rotates;
  • if the printer is crooked and does not pick up paper well, wipe or replace the roller rubber;
  • start printing on heavier paper and try to push through any jammed paper that may be jammed (apply force when picking up the paper).

One of the common problems that HP printer owners face is the failure of the printing machine to pick up paper placed in the tray. This malfunction can be caused by several reasons. Consider the main problems and how to fix them.

Paper or foreign object is jammed in the printer

Paper jams are common in all printers and MFPs. This can happen for various reasons:

  • Using poor quality paper (such as paper that is too thin).
  • The sheet of paper being printed is damaged.
  • The paper is not installed correctly in the tray (the paper guides are not retracted).
  • Mechanical deformation of tray parts or guide rails.
  • One of the paper feed rollers is dirty or deformed.
  • And others.

In most cases, paper jams can be easily removed from the printer. If it is not visually visible inside the tray, the top cover of the press may need to be removed. In all other cases, the printer will have to be disassembled. Yes, to what extent to do this - depends on design features specific device.

If the cause of the malfunction is the obstruction of the movement of rotating mechanisms when paper jams inside the printer, then in the case of jamming of foreign objects, a different picture may be observed. It all depends on the size and hardness of the stuck object. For example, a metal clip can easily cause mechanical damage to gears, which are usually made of plastic. If even one tooth of any gear is damaged, the printer may stop functioning.

In other words, if the cause of the failure of the printing machine is not a jammed piece of paper, the device needs to be shown to a specialist. In this case, it is not recommended to attempt to print, because. the situation may worsen.

Wrong paper and settings

The normal operation of any printer is possible only when using paper that is suitable for technical and operational characteristics. If the sheets are not of the correct quality or their specifications (weight, surface type, etc.) do not meet HP specifications, the printer may have difficulty handling the sheets. This is especially true when printing on photo paper. To determine if the paper you are currently using is suitable, refer to the User's Guide for specific model HP printer. The required technical documentation can be downloaded from the HP support site - https://support.hp.com.

Paper pickup failure can also be caused by incorrect settings in the device driver. You can fix it like this:

  • Open driver settings. To do this, in any application from which printing is carried out (even in a browser), press the key combination "Ctrl + P".
  • In the "Printer" section, in the "Name" field, select the name of the printer, then click the "Properties" button (the button may have different names).
  • Find the tab/section in the window where you can set the paper size and type (usually it is "Paper/Quality").
  • In the paper settings, there should be a drop-down menu - "Paper size". Select the size that matches the size of the paper loaded in the tray.
  • Apply the changes, then try printing a test copy.

Failure of printer hardware or software settings

Any operation performed by the printer is performed according to a predetermined program. Modern printing machines are computerized devices equipped with a controller, RAM, internal memory, and other computing electronic components. Like any computer, the printer's control electronics can fail, which can affect the correct performance of any operation, including picking up paper from a tray. The solution is to reset the hardware / software settings of the printing machine.

For most HP printers, resetting is very easy:

  • Clear the print queue on the computer so that the printer is waiting for a command.
  • Without turning off the printer with the power button, remove network cable from the device or outlet.
  • Wait 15-20 seconds and then connect the network cable.
  • Turn on the printer using the power button.
  • The device settings will be reset.
  • Retry printing.

Resetting the settings can also be done by reinstalling the driver on the computer. Also, this operation will eliminate possible printer problems associated with the operation of software on a computer or by transferring data between a PC and a printing machine (especially if the connection is via local network). Before installing a new driver, it is recommended that you completely remove the software already installed on the printer from the system, including the HP utility utilities.

To remove a driver:

  • Navigate in sequence: "Control Panel", "Hardware and Sound", "Device Manager" (the link may be under the name of the "Devices and Printers" section).
  • In the newly opened window, you can see all the devices installed on the computer. Among them to be found installed printer HP. It can be located under "Print Queues", " USB controllers", "Port (COM and LPT)" or other.
  • Find the name of the printer and right-click on it, then select "Uninstall Device".
  • The driver will be removed.

To remove service utilities:

  • Go from the "Control Panel" to the "Programs" section, then to the "Uninstall a Program" subsection.
  • In the list that appears on the screen, find applications associated with the printer, for example - HP Print and Scan Doctor, HP Solution Center, HP Toolbox, etc.
  • Right-click on the application name and select "Uninstall".
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • Next, you need to download and install the latest printer drivers:
  • Open the HP support site in a browser - https://support.hp.com
  • Enter the printer model in the search field (can be found on the device case), for example - "HP LaserJet Pro M1132".
  • The printer page will open. Click on the "Software and Drivers" link.
  • Download latest version HP software.
  • Run the driver installer, follow the instructions on the screen.

Dirty paper feed rollers

The main mechanism responsible for capturing paper is a small (tray-wide) rotating shaft, in the design of which there are rubber rollers. Unlike other paper feed mechanisms, the feed rollers are open, so they are most susceptible to contamination. During operation, paper dust, lint, ink and other contaminants accumulate on the surface of the rollers, which reduce the tenacity of the rubber pads. Thus, they slip on the surface of the paper, as a result of which it is either not captured by the mechanism at all, or it is not captured correctly.

You can use the printer's built-in function to clean the feed rollers:

  • Install multiple sheets of paper in the tray.
  • On your computer, go to the "Devices and Printers" subsection from the "Windows Control Panel".
  • In the newly opened window, find the icon of the HP printer on which the roller cleaning operation will be performed.
  • Right-click on the icon, then select "Printing Preferences" from the menu.
  • A new window will open. Go to the "Features" tab, then click on the "Printer Services" button.
  • Press the "Paper Feed Cleaning" button to start the roller cleaning function. Click OK on the dialog box.
  • Cleaning will take a few minutes.

If the software cleaning of the feed rollers did not give the desired result, this operation can also be performed manually:

  • The first step is to gain access to the paper feed rollers. Depending on the design of your particular HP printer model, this can be done by removing the snap-on rear cover, by removing the paper feed module (for duplex printers), or by disassembling the device.
  • However, on most HP office and home printers, the paper feed rollers are located in a recess in the tray.
  • Take any lint-free material and moisten it with clean water.
  • Wipe the paper feed rollers by gradually rotating the entire shaft by hand. Do not touch the rubber roller pads with your fingers.
  • After cleaning is complete, allow the rollers to dry for a few minutes, then print again.

If none of the above troubleshooting methods help, you may need to take the printer to a service center. The most optimistic cause of problems is the natural wear of the rubber pads of the pinch rollers. In this case, they will simply be replaced with new overlays.
