Firmware dvd drive in a laptop. Home DVD player upgrade. Firmware DVD drive from Windows

Firmware (firmware) is a special program (microcode) or "operating system" for devices such as ( motherboard BIOS, CD / DVD drive, ADSL modem, DVD player, mobile phone, modern TV). This microcode is stored in the device's Flash memory and can be overwritten.
Firmware ( firmware) is also called a file that contains an updated and improved version of the device upgrade program.
Firmware ( firmware) is also called a flasher program (flasher) designed to load this file into the device's Flash memory.
Firmware ( firmware) is also called the process of loading the program into the device.
In software execution, the firmware, as a rule, is a binary file (with the extension *.bin), less often an executable file *.exe.

What advantages will we get after updating the firmware (flashing)

There are many reasons why you need to update the firmware (firmware):
– for compatibility with new software (for example, with new operating systems);
– to improve the performance of the device;
- to expand the configuration options (add new features);
- to fix bugs and bugs software drive (eliminate glitches and bugs);
– to remove binding to a region (setting a multi-zone drive);
– to change the ID string of the drive (for example, firmware from Kiss will show the drive as Kiss, not as Toshiba);
- to remove the riplock;
-- and much more

Riplock what is it?

Riplock (riplock) is a blocking of the read speed of the drive for some types of discs. Riplock was conceived as one of the methods of combating video pirates: it does not allow you to quickly copy videos (this is its main purpose). Another purpose of riplock is to reduce the noise level when playing DVD movies.
Most firmwares have the riplock removed, allowing for faster rip speeds, but this is usually only the case for pressed DVDs. Removing the riplock can make your drive noisier when playing stamped DVDs on your PC.

RPC-1 and RPC-2
There are two types of CD and DVD drives: RPC-1(Region Free) - free from regional protection (the so-called multi-zone), and RPC-2(Region Protection) - with regional protection. Even RPC-1 drives sometimes require region unbinding software in order to play DVDs.

Flash programs (flashers) are available for both DOS and Windows.

Owners of DVD-players of these series very often face the problem of lack of Cyrillic support, as a result, any Russian names of media files on media are displayed in "hieroglyphs", even despite the Russified menu. In this article I will tell you how to properly flash the Pioneer DVD player DV-400/410/420/600/610 models with Cyrillic support.
This information is intended primarily for beginners, therefore it is replete with a large number of screenshots and detailed descriptions of actions that may seem to the average user to be completely self-explanatory. Please be understanding.
1. And so, open a web browser and go to the Pioneiro FAQ site, in particular, to the firmware section, as shown in Figure 1 with a red marker.

Any copying of materials is allowed only with an active link to the source

A WARNING!!! You perform software replacement (flashing) at your own peril and risk. We consider it our duty to warn you that this procedure automatically voids your warranty and may lead to player failure. No one (neither the authors of this site, nor this manual), except you, is responsible for the actions described in this manual.

So. What we need for flashing:
1. Directly the firmware file itself.
2. Blank matrix (blank) CD-R or CD-RW
3. Computer with a drive capable of writing to CD-R(CD-RW)
4. Program Nero Burning Rom version not lower than 6.6.х.х. It is assumed that it is already on your computer.
5. Actually the player that we will flash (Pioneer DV-2850/DV-380/DV-585) :)))

The firmware process consists of 2 stages:
1. Writing firmware to the matrix;
2. Direct flashing;

Stage 1. Writing the firmware to the matrix.

1. Insert a blank CD-R(CD-RW) matrix into the drive
2. Run the program Nero Burning Rom

3. Select the type of disk on the left: " CD-ROM (ISO)"
4. On the tab " Multisession" put a daw: " No Multisession"
5. Go to the tab: " ISO":

6. Data mode: " Mode 1"
7. File system / File system: " ISO 9660 only"
8. File name length (ISO): " Max. out of 11 = 8 + 3 char. (Level 1)/Max of 11 = 8+3 chars (Level 1)"
9. Character set (ISO) / Character set (ISO): " ISO 9660 (ISO CD-ROM standard)/ISO 9660"
10. Go to the next tab: " Sticker/Label":

11. Specify Disc Name/Label IN CAPITAL LETTERS: PIONEER
12. Go to the tab: " Record/Burn":

13. Expose Write method: "Disc-at-once"
14. Burn speed/Burn speed: 4x
15. All nothing no more touching. We press the button: " New/New":

16. Drag the firmware into our project (it must be extracted from the archive!)
17. Press the button Record/Burn

The process of writing the firmware to disk will begin. If Nero does not issue any error messages during this process, then the first stage can be considered completed. If something still happened, carefully read the error message and repeat all the steps again.

Stage 2. Player firmware

1. Turn on the TV, put it in AV mode.
2. Turn on the player.
3. We insert our disk with firmware into it, close the tray.
4. After a few seconds, the following will appear on a black screen in a box:

5. Press the button " play" and
4. The screen displays " Upgrade"
5. After reading the disc, the tray moves out, now you can remove the disc and again DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE either on the player or on the remote
6. Within 2 minutes, the firmware is replaced, the tray closes itself, the player restarts.
7. The firmware is completed.

Attention!!! Once again, a few highlights: after pressing the "Play" button and until the moment when the player closes the tray itself and reboots, do not press any buttons either on the player or on the remote control. The only thing you can do is remove the disc from the tray when it (the tray) opens itself. Even if it seems to you that the process is going on for more than 2 minutes and the player is frozen, wait a little more. It is advisable to connect the player to an uninterruptible power supply for the duration of the firmware.

As a result of a malfunction of memory chips or network failures, a violation of the program located in the chip itself is possible. To update or replace the contents of the memory (flashing), it becomes necessary to have a memory dump from a specific model of the DVD player (player). In this section, you can download the files we have collected (memory dumps). Before updating, it is highly recommended to save the old dump in case of incompatibility of software versions.

All files and information are intended for specialists in the field of repair. If you are not, we advise you not to experiment.

How to flash a DVD player

Updating the firmware in the DVD player occurs either through the program, or FLASH programmer memory via SPI interface.

Keep in mind that despite the general similarity, each brand has its own firmware features. Inside many archives there is a detailed description for a specific model. In case of additional questions, ask them in our forum, where the main visitors are repair specialists.

Firmware is software that is actually the operating system of a device (BIOS chip, DVD drive, modem, player, mobile phone …).
Firmware is also called a file that contains updated version programs for upgrading the device.

Firmware is sometimes called a flasher program (flasher) designed to load this file into the device's Flash memory.
Firmware is also the process of loading a program into a device.
In software execution, the firmware, as a rule, is a binary file (with the extension *.bin), less often an executable file *.exe.

Why do I need a firmware update (flashing)

There are many reasons why you need to update the firmware (firmware):
- for compatibility with new software (for example, with new operating systems);
- to improve the performance of the device;
- to expand the configuration options (add new features);
- to correct errors and shortcomings in the drive software (eliminate glitches and bugs);
- to remove binding to a region (setting a multi-zone drive);
- to change the ID string of the drive (for example, firmware from Kiss will show the drive as Kiss, not as Toshiba);
- to remove the riplock;
- …

How to make a backup of the original firmware

To save a copy of the original firmware, use special programs like Binflash.

Run the program, make sure that the drive you want to backup from is selected.
Select the DUMP option.

Assign a file name for your backup.

What is riplock and why is it needed

Riplock (riplock) is a blocking of the read speed of the drive for some types of disks.

What is RPC-1 and RPC-2

There are two types of DVD drives:
RPC-1(Region Free) - free from regional protection (the so-called multi-zone);
RPC-2(Region Protection) - with regional protection.
Even RPC-1 drives sometimes require region unbinding software in order to play DVDs.

Flash programs (flashers) are available for both DOS and Windows.

Firmware DVD drive from DOS

Insert a 3.5 inch floppy disk into the floppy drive (see, sometimes they can still come in very handy!).
- Open My Computer, right-click Disk 3.5, from the context menu select Format...
- The Format Disk 3.5 (A:) window opens.
- Select the formatting method - Create a bootable MS-DOS disk (by checking the box).
Click Start - OK.
This will copy the following files to the disk:
DISPLAY.SYS
EGA2.CPI
EGA3.CPI
EGA.CPI
KEYB.COM
KEYBOARD.SYS
KEYBRD2.SYS
KEYBRD3.SYS
KEYBRD4.SYS
MODE.COM
- Find the firmware for your DVD drive.
You should start searching for firmware from the drive manufacturer's website.

The original firmware is called original firmware.
- Download the firmware, unpack the archived file (in the archive, as a rule:
Readme - instruction,
UPDATE.BAT - batch file for launching the flasher,
v******.exe - flasher,
******.bin - firmware).
- Copy the UPDATE.BAT, v******.exe, ******.bin files to the boot floppy.
- Restart your PC. When rebooting, press the Delete key to enter the BIOS Setup utility.
- Set the floppy drive as the first boot device (1st Boot Device - FLOPPY DRIVE).

- After booting the PC from the floppy disk, the system prompt A:\> will appear
- type UPDATE.BAT (you can use lowercase letters and without extension - update), press Enter.
- If a message appears that the update file was not found, to find the batch file on the floppy to run the flash driver, type dir, press Enter.
- The flasher will boot (for example, the flasher for the TOSHIBA ODD-DVD SD-M1802 drive will display the following information when booting: ***Flash Program to upgrade SD-M1802 …).
- You will be prompted to press any key - Press any key to continue…
- Flasher will scan the drives.
- The tray of the drive to be flashed will pop out and the following message will appear:
Over Write Flash-ROM? (Y/N):
Type Y, press Enter.
- The process of flashing the drive will begin (the duration of the flashing is on average 1.5-2 minutes).
- If the firmware is successful, the drive tray will close and a message will appear with the drive name and firmware number.
- At the system prompt A:\ > click Reset.
- When rebooting, press the Delete key to enter the BIOS Setup utility.
- Install the hard drive as the first boot device (1st Boot Device - HARD DRIVE).
- Press , authorize saving changes.
- After loading the operating system, a message will appear that new hardware has been found - a DVD drive.
The OS will select drivers for it from its library.
You can use the drive!

Firmware DVD drive from Windows

– Open the tray of the flashable DVD drive.
- Run the flasher (there are universal flashers, for example, the sfdnwin_3.25.4 flasher is designed to flash Toshiba and Samsung drives).
- In the Drive drop-down list, select the desired drive.
- Click the Download File Open button.
- In the Open window, specify the location of the firmware.
If this firmware is not suitable for this drive, the MESSAGE window will appear with the error message "File Open Fail (No Flash File)!! 0b 0kb 0cmd".
- Click the "Start Download" button.

Attention!

1. Flashing DVD-drives (however, other hardware too!) Is a potentially dangerous and hard-to-predict occupation!
If the drive is under warranty, maybe it's easier to contact a store or service center?
2. Even use original firmware(from the drive manufacturer) does not guarantee the integrity and performance of the DVD drive after flashing.
3. Try to find the firmware for your DVD drive model. If firmware from the same manufacturer is used, but for a different model, the results may be unpredictable!
4. Do not close the drive tray or restart the PC to avoid damage to the DVD drive!
5. If the PC freezes during the firmware, click Reset (or turn off the PC and turn it on again).
6. If, after flashing and restarting the PC, the DVD drive stops responding (perhaps it will not be detected even at the BIOS level!), turn off the PC and turn it on again.
7. DVD drive firmware from DOS is considered more reliable than from Windows.

Author's note

There is a problem: discs written on some drives are sometimes not readable on other drives (the main reason for this is the "spread" of the parameters of drives and discs).
However, this is not a malfunction of the drive and, probably, this is not yet a reason for flashing.
As a rule, they decide on a flashing already when they “got glitches and bugs”, i.e. when there's nothing left to lose...
Therefore, before you decide on a flashing, think carefully!

To save a copy of the original firmware, you can use the Binflash program.
Download and install it.
Run the program, select the drive for "backup".
Select the DUMP option.
A file selection dialog will appear.
Select a file name for the copy of the original firmware.
Click SAVE and wait until the backup process is completed.

Once again I emphasize that even the use of the original firmware (from the manufacturer of the drive!) DOES NOT GUARANTEE (!) the integrity and performance of the DVD drive after the firmware.
Those. the result of a flashing may be such a situation that the drive will simply have to be thrown out!
