There is only one creative writing task in the “Highest Standard” Olympiad: write an illustrated article or story. However the weight of this task is very high - 60 points out of a maximum possible 100. Therefore, it is impossible to win the “Highest Test” without knowing how to write.

You choose the illustrations for your work from 12 proposed photographs. The photos are the same for everyone, but the task is different:

7th grade

Write story on one of the three proposed topics, choosing 4 photographs as illustrations. Workload: 180–300 words.

8–9 grades

Write article on one of three proposed topics, choosing 6 photographs as illustrations. Workload: 220–360 words.

10–11 grades

Write article, independently coming up with its theme and choosing 6 photographs as illustrations. Workload: 220–360 words.

To successfully complete any of these tasks, you need to be able to do several things:

    choose (or come up with) the most successful topic;

    choose pictures that fit the topic;

    draw up a work plan;

    link photographs to the plan, defining the main idea of each of them;

    write a paper in accordance with the specific format and style.

Now we will deal with all these things using the example of a task in the format of an article on the “Highest Test”.

Imagine that you are a journalist who is writing an illustrated article. Decide what magazine (target audience) do you write for and what topic you’d like to cover.

You need to use 6 pictures for your article (you can choose any 6 pictures from the table below).

Don't forget to:

  • think of a magazine (target audience) and write it down;
  • formulate the topic of the article and write a headline;
  • write an introduction (you do not need a picture for an introduction);
  • choose 6 pictures for your illustrated article, put them in the right order and comment on every picture in 2-4 sentences;
  • write a conclusion (you do not need a picture for a conclusion).

Total: 220–360 words.

Choosing a theme

The topic is the first thing you need to decide on. In grades 10 and 11, you will need to come up with a topic yourself. At 7, 8 and 9 - choose from those offered.

A correctly chosen topic is when:

  • have something to say;
  • there is a vocabulary to say it;
  • there are suitable photographs to illustrate what has been said.

Of course, there are no universally good or universally bad topics; it all depends on our interests and linguistic background. For example, there are three topics to choose from:

  1. Why is family important
  2. Things that make us happy

We begin to analyze which topic would be best suited. First we look at where we have the most ideas.. Let’s say, on topic number 1. Let’s collect our thoughts: the family gives support, we learn to build relationships in the family, the family is an integral part of society, the family is with us from birth, we can rely on the family... Now let's see if we can translate these thoughts into English. Do we know the words “provide support”, “integral part”, “relationship”, “society”, “birth”, “rely on”? If most of the words needed to express our thoughts are not in our vocabulary, then no matter how good the ideas are, we will have to choose another topic. By the way, it is better to collect thoughts and ideas directly in English, bypassing Russian - this saves time and increases the likelihood of remembering some useful expression.

Let's say we are convinced that we have enough thoughts and words on topic number 1. The next step is to check if there are suitable photos. To do this, we look at what was offered to us. Most likely, at first glance it will seem that there are not enough suitable photographs. For example, it is obvious that the family theme includes pictures A, F, I. But these are only three, and we need more. Then we look at other pictures and think about how we can tie them to the theme. For example, photo E may be suitable to illustrate the idea “it’s harder to cope with difficulties alone, but the family will always support.” Picture J can be used in a paragraph about family holidays and traditions. Image G can be played up using an idiom with the word “hand” - “give a helping hand”. Image K is suitable if we talk about the transfer of experience from elders to younger ones in the family. Photo B is an illustration of the importance of family regardless of country of residence. Now there are not three, but eight suitable images - even more than needed were found. If, despite all your efforts, you do not see suitable pictures, you will have to change the topic. Don't enter an image if it doesn't fit - you'll lose points

Of course, the proposed procedure is not mandatory. You can choose any other strategy that suits you. For example, starting by looking at pictures can give you additional ideas and make it easier to choose a topic. Or select vocabulary not for thoughts, but for images, and based on this decide where the optimal margin is. But no matter how you choose, the most important thing is that the chosen topic has enough thoughts, words, and images.

How to come up with a topic for an article?

Inventing a topic on your own gives greater freedom, but it is somewhat more difficult than choosing from the ones proposed, because there are no reference points. Hence, task number one is to find reference points by analyzing the images. You can do this like this: take a picture and write down the key points related to it on a draft. For example:

    A - family, being together, smiling, food.

    B - family, traditional clothes, foreign country, unusual, winter.

    C - young, happy, rain, smiling, laughing.

    D - traditional clothes, unusual, oriental.

    E - studying, attentive, interesting / boring, young.

    F - family, summer, happiness, walking, enjoying a good day.

    G - hands, friends, summer day, union.

    H - child, holiday, autumn, happy, fun, decorations.

    I - elderly, fun, enjoying themselves, bubbles, happy, family.

    J - decorations, Christmas, traditions, winter.

    K - young and elderly, traditions, smiles, love, happy.

    L - wedding, traditions, happy, friends, family.

Once you do this, you will see that some keywords are repeated. For example, in our case it is family, traditional, happy, together. In addition, there is common topics, which include keywords: age (young, elderly), seasons (summer, winter, autumn). Based on these words, you can build topics:

  • family- family in our life, what makes a good family;
  • traditional- everyday traditions, traditions around the world, why do we need traditions, are traditions fun;
  • happy- how to be happy, is it easy to be happy, happy people have something in common, friends and happiness;
  • together- it's important to have people around, being lonely means being unhappy;
  • age- being happy all your life, is it easier to be happy when you are young, importance of traditions for children and adults;
  • seasons- how to have fun all year round, there is charm in every season.

Once you've jotted down a list of topics, see which ones provide the most scope for action.. For example, topics that combine two keywords automatically give you the opportunity to attach more images to them. Cross out topics if you feel you have nothing to say about them. When there are 1-2 topics left, make a plan for one of them, think about what you will write. If the plan turns out well, then start writing the article. If the plan doesn't work out, try making it for a different topic. The most important - don’t rush to write an article without deciding on a topic finally and without making sure that you have enough thoughts for all 6 meaningful paragraphs.

How to choose pictures for the proposed topic?

Let's take a look at our topics to choose from:

  1. Why is family important
  2. Things that make us happy
  3. Different cultures - different customs

The images in the assignment are selected in such a way that some of them may relate to two or even all three topics at once. At first glance, this is not always obvious, so you need to look at the pictures with all seriousness and concentration.

Let's take picture A. The first thing that comes to mind (in my head, but something else may come first to yours) is that the picture relates to the topic of family. However, this does not mean that it is lost for other topics. The people in the photo look happy, they are happy to be together - this fits the theme of happiness. Breakfast with the family is a tradition in some countries, so this applies to the third remaining topic.

Let's look at picture F. The obvious theme is traditions different countries. But you can fantasize within the framework of the topic about happiness and write a paragraph about how the possibility of self-expression through appearance is one of the components of happiness. And then the picture will turn out appropriate.

You can do the same with almost any image. Of course, you shouldn’t pull pictures by your ears, but you also don’t need to despair if you don’t see the right images right away - they will be found if you search carefully.

How to come up with a magazine name and target audience?

The easiest way to make homework is with neutral names that fit most themes. For example, “Real Simple”, “Entertainment Weekly”, “Self”, “Sunset Magazine”. This will save you time coming up with a name. However, nothing prevents you from coming up with original names on the go if you know how to do it quickly.

As for the target audience, start from the content of the written work. Who would be interested in reading what you write about? If you're talking about overcoming stress, your target audience might be students or office workers. If we are talking about saving animals, then potential readers are animal advocates. Read about computer games It will be more interesting for teenagers, and about knitting - for grandmothers.

How to make a plan?

An example of completing a task in article format at the “Highest Test”

In an article on the "Highest Standard" we are limited to 220-360 words. Having a clear plan in hand, it is very convenient to regulate the number of words in your work. Divide the words by the number of paragraphs and get 27–45 words per paragraph. Keeping track of the number of words in a paragraph is much easier than trying to calculate the volume of the entire essay at once.

Let's write the introduction, keeping in mind that we are limited to 27-45 words.

Who is happier: an innocent baby babbling enthusiastically or an elderly person, having all the wisdom in the world? It seems that any given age has room for happiness, but things that bring it about might be different. (38 words)

If, after writing the introduction, you counted the words and saw that you got, for example, 60, then cross out the unnecessary ones, rephrase them until you fit into the required interval. If it turns out that there are not enough words, think about how you can expand, what you can add. The same should be done with all the following paragraphs: wrote - checked the number of words.

Being a baby or a child is associated with having very few responsibilities and a lot of time for playing around. For inexperienced children every day stores a surprise, a new discovery to make. Life is fun and full of adventure. (41 words)

Growing into a teenager takes away one"s childish carefree attitude, but in return it gives a satisfying feeling of becoming more independent. New things are learned, new opportunities open up, new friends are made - life is exciting. (37 words)

As independence continues to grow, young adults find themselves able to travel, choose their jobs, build romantic relationships. This is the time when one can start revealing one's potential, and life is never boring. (37 words)

Once a certain age is reached, people start thinking about having a family. Some get married and are happily occupied with their new social state and, probably, a new place to live. Love and being together can make this period quite blissful. (42 words)

Life changes when a baby appears. Caring about a new-born creature adds significantly to one valuable feeling and important. Besides this, spending time with the children you enjoy the joyful time of your own childhood. (35 words)

Finally, when middle age is behind us and a person retires, it"s finally the period when there"s no need to work anymore. Why not take up new hobbies, spend time with the family, travel and enjoy complete freedom and independence? (41 words)

The conclusion sums up everything that has been said. The idea expressed in the introduction echoes the conclusion, but it is important not to repeat it in the same words. Try to paraphrase.

All in all, life can be fascinating regardless of age. If you are set on being happy, don"t wait for a particular period. Just look around, find appealing things, do what you like and like what you do - then you will be truly happy. (44 words)

Underwater rocks

During your work, you will encounter various traps. Here are some of them.

Additional Thoughts

Let's say in the first paragraph you started writing, in accordance with the plan, about the fact that the child has few responsibilities, that he can run and play, enjoy life at least every minute. And suddenly you realized that this is not entirely true. After all, a child does not always do what he wants - parents forbid, force. And there are responsibilities too - kindergarten, elementary school. If you give in to temptation and start writing about the negative aspects of childhood that are missing from the plan, then by the end of the third or fourth paragraph you will find that you have almost reached the vocabulary limit, and the topic has not yet been fully covered. Therefore, when, in the process of writing a paper, another thought suddenly comes to you that was not included in the plan, do not rush to express it. Look first to see if it will disrupt the planned structure.

Sudden change of mind

The root of this error is the same deviation from the plan. For example, we wrote the first two paragraphs as planned, but in the third we thought: “Growth of independence, the beginning of an independent life - so this is the happiest age! It will be necessary to write not the same conclusion as outlined in the plan, but a different one.” The trouble is that you can’t get away with this with just a conclusion. If, according to the plan, you wrote continuous advantages in the first two paragraphs, then your conclusion that the happiest age is young adult will be illogical. To make it logical, you need to change the first, second, and all other paragraphs. Therefore, if you have already clearly planned everything, there is no need to rush from side to side.

Realization that the plan is not very good

If you started writing and it became clear to you that the plan could have been made better, then it all depends on the moment at which you realized it. When half of the work has already been written, it is better not to make drastic changes - you may simply not have time. If the realization came at the very beginning, then it is worth trying to change or improve the plan before implementing it.

Results

An article on the “Highest Standard” requires mastery of the article format, as well as the ability to quickly analyze and summarize information in pictures.

In 2018-2019, the next interregional Olympiad for schoolchildren “Highest Test” will take place, established by High school Economics (HSE). This popular competition has been running since 1998. It received its modern name in 2012. High school students from Russia and other countries of the “post-Soviet space”, including Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, can participate in it free of charge. Winners and runners-up of the Olympiad have the right to significant benefits when entering Russian universities.

Mission of the Olympics

In addition to the general cultural mission of popularizing education among young people, “Highest Test” strives to select best students for the country's leading universities. Such competitions have partly replaced the previous entrance exams and are a real alternative to the Unified State Exam. Almost all major Russian universities give priority when enrolling to the winners and prize-winners of their Olympiads (or other similar competitions). “The highest standard” is distinguished by its humanitarian orientation. Among the core disciplines for high school students in 2018-2019 are economics, English, philosophy and other social sciences.

Preparation for participation

To prepare for the “Highest Test” Olympiad, you can use demo versions of tests, as well as assignments and topics from previous years. All of them are available for free on the official website https://olymp.hse.ru/mmo/. "Higher Standard" is a prestigious, highly competitive competition, so participation in it only makes sense if you are truly interested in the chosen subject and have the necessary knowledge. It should be added that such competitions require physical endurance and resistance to stressful situations.

Registration and organizational issues

Tens of thousands of schoolchildren from Russia and foreign countries participate in the “Highest Test” Olympiad. The number of prize places is about two thousand. Registration is carried out electronically on the official website until October 2018. The competition itself is divided into two stages. The first round is planned for November-December 2018. He is a qualifier. The exam takes place in absentia, online from any computer, provided you enter the login and password provided by the organizers. For some subjects, participants will be asked to write a short essay. The dates of the qualifying round are determined in advance, the time for completing tasks is strictly limited. Detailed information about this will be published in September 2018. Last year's "Highest Standard" laureates from non-graduating classes are exempt from qualifying competitions, but are also required to register. Those interested can participate in competitions in several subjects at once, if their schedule allows it.

Participants who successfully pass the first round are admitted to the second, final round. It will be held in January-February 2019 only in person in different cities of Russia or in foreign countries. Organizational and technical support at this stage are carried out by local educational institutions selected as partners of the HSE.

All applicants are required to bring with them a number of documents:

  • Printed “Title Page”, which is sent by e-mail. It confirms the right to participate in the final competition.
  • An identification document (passport, birth certificate) and a certificate from your educational institution.

Schoolchildren can independently choose the place and date of the competition that is convenient for them from the options offered by the organizers. During the finals, it is prohibited to use any reference materials, as well as any electronic devices. In some cases, exceptions are allowed for the simplest calculators.

After checking the entries and possible appeals, the jury will announce the winners and runners-up for all subjects. As a rule, this happens in early spring. Later, in Moscow and other cities of Russia where HSE branches are open, a solemn award ceremony will be held with the presentation of commemorative diplomas. These documents can be submitted to the admissions committees of Russian universities.

Winner takes all?

“The highest test” and other similar competitions are often criticized for being “elitistic” and “discriminatory” against students who do not have the opportunity or desire to participate. First of all, this applies to children from low-income families or from remote regions of the Russian Federation. Cases of fraud discovered during these competitions are sometimes mentioned. However, this rarely happens. Evidence shows that laureates of past Olympiads generally do better in universities than students enrolled through the Unified State Exam system.

Most subjects of the “highest standard” are included in the official “List of Olympiads for schoolchildren”, approved by the government of the Russian Federation. Winners and runners-up of this competition are entitled to the following benefits:

  • enrollment in universities without additional tests of knowledge in the core subject of the Olympiad;
  • maximum Unified State Exam score in the relevant subject of the Olympiad;
  • students from non-graduating classes can participate in the final round next year without going through the pre-selection “sieve”.

Every year, more than a thousand laureates of the “Highest Standard” become students of the most prestigious Russian universities.
