Samsung smartphone Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900 Overview

Despite the fact that I generally have a very good attitude towards Samsung smartphones, some time ago I stopped using them - mainly only due to the fact that the Super AMOLED matrices used in them faded in the sun up to almost complete invisibility, which I personally like a simple Spanish pilot was a little annoyed, because in Spain there is so much of this sun that the country can even export it. But as time went on, and Samsung engineers worked hard to return me to the bosom of the Holy Catholic Church of users of their smartphones, and I must say, they have achieved significant success in this direction. However, first things first. The hero of our today's broadcast is the hotly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, which continues the legendary line of the Galaxy Note series. Why did I call this line legendary? Yes, because it was in Samsung that they first came up with the idea of making a smartphone the size of a shovel. When the Galaxy Note was first shown at the show, short-sighted people pointed fingers at it, laughed and said all sorts of hurtful things. And then Note literally blew up the market, because it was very popular (well, the very competent steps of the company's marketing department should also be noted here), after which all other companies hurriedly rushed to release smartphones with a large display, because the size still matters . After that, the company released a very successful model Galaxy Note II, and now there is a new model on the market - Galaxy Note 3, which the Ulmart online store kindly provided to me for study, so we are now with you and see what it is.

The weight: 168 g
Price in Moscow: 20-26 thousand rubles Well, the filling of this device is gorgeous. Octa-core processor, 3 GB RAM, Wi-Fi with the latest 802.11ac dual band protocol, 13 MP camera, powerful removable battery, memory card support. The beauty! The only thing missing is support for LTE networks: by the way, the Galaxy Note 3 has it, but the other model (N9005) has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 system. Contents of delivery Traditional "tie a yellow ribbon on old oak" style packaging.

Team lineup today: Smartphone, USB 3.0 cable, power adapter, battery, stereo headset with in-ear headphones, brochures, replacement S-Pen nib kit, and nib ejector.

Appearance and features From the front, the new model is not too different from its predecessor. White plastic, a metal speaker grille and three sensors on top, an oblong Home button on the bottom (which I really miss in many other smartphones). The metal rim of the side faces has become corrugated. The smartphone seems large and weighty, but compared to the previous model, it has decreased in width and thickness, and the weight has become less by 12 grams.

With the back cover, the developers finally abandoned the "remember the warm vodka in the entrance from the soap dish" style. Now there is not glossy plastic, but plastic that imitates artificial leather: there is even a “stitching” along the edges. It looks an order of magnitude better than the old cover, the phone is now clearly more comfortable in the hand, and that it is plastic and not artificial leather, which some reviewers complained about, is not a problem for me at all, because it helps to save artificial animals.

Bottom: The S-Pen slot, which is conveniently removed and can be inserted into the slot in two positions, instead of one, as before. Next are the speaker grille, microphone, and USB 3.0 slot.

Yes, yes, this is USB 3.0, under which Samsung attaches a special cable, the head of which looks like this.

At first, I swore at this cable for a long time - they say, it used to be so convenient, all smartphones are powered by microUSB and from the same adapters, so everything was completely interchangeable, but here you are ... However, it turned out that the smartphone remained fully compatible with USB 2.0 and microUSB cables. When you connect a new cable to a USB 3.0 port, the transfer speed increases by one and a half to two times compared to the old type of connection (according to purely practical tests that I conducted), but you can, as before, connect your smartphone to a USB 2.0 port with the most common cable USB-microUSB, for which many thanks! The right side is the power button in a traditionally convenient place.

Upper edge: output for the headset and infrared sensor so that the smartphone can be used as an electronics control panel.

The left side face is the volume rocker.

Well, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 next to LG G2.

By the way, I like that Samsung does not change the traditional arrangement of control buttons from smartphone to smartphone. They have this arrangement carefully calibrated, the button travel is usually almost perfect, so it's good that this continuity is constantly maintained. Display The display here, as almost always in modern flagship Samsung smartphones, is Super AMOLED. These displays have always been characterized by very bright and even "acidic" colors, which, however, could be adjusted by changing color profile, and besides, one of the features of these displays was the fading of the screen in direct sunlight up to almost complete unreadability. Actually, in many respects because of this, I eventually abandoned Samsung smartphones: I often have to be in the sun, so this feature greatly annoyed. And only after testing the Galaxy Note 3, I can now say that the Super AMOLED display finally got rid of its most annoying (for me personally) feature, because this display in direct sunlight remained quite readable. Yes, of course, it fades, but not stronger than regular IPS. At the same time, the Galaxy Note 3 has excellent image quality, very saturated, but at the same time natural colors, excellent text quality, very good viewing angles (when tilted vertically or horizontally, the brightness only slightly decreases). Well, by the way, even auto-brightness here works more or less decently, which rarely happens on android smartphones. (Although, I must say, in artificial lighting, this auto-adjustment either too darkens the screen, or, on the contrary, makes it too bright, so I turn auto-adjustment off anyway.) It should also be noted a very high-quality oleophobic coating, which allows the display to not get stuck in the process of use. The brightness margin is good. For sunny daylight, I usually put somewhere 50-60%. In general, I am very pleased with the display of this smartphone from all sides. This is in addition to the fact that on a similar display size and its resolution, using the Internet is a pleasure. Device operation In the Galaxy Note II review, I wrote in some detail about the TouchWiz shell and system applications from Samsung. Therefore, in this review we will try to focus on the new features and features of this model. The main desktop with a branded weather and date-time widget.

Second desktop with news widget and walking coach widget.

Fourth desktop with notes widget.

The fifth desktop with the Samsung Hub widget.

Applications installed on the system.

Folder with Samsung applications.

Galaxy Plus Apps.

Google apps folder.

Application area.

Set of quick settings buttons.

Moreover, the set of these buttons can be flexibly edited.

Lock screen. (I usually turn it off, it's annoying.) Here you can add various widgets, information about missed calls and messages is displayed on the screen. The icon below will take you directly to the camera app.

The smartphone has a lot of all sorts of tricky features. For example, you can enable an option in which when you bring your hand to the off display, a screen with various information will appear on it for a few seconds - like this.

context commands. One of the most interesting innovations is the so-called context commands that are associated with the S-Pen. Context commands appear when you pull out the pen, and they can also be called by pressing the button on the pen. What is provided there?

The first is to call the active note. This thing is extremely interesting and functional. You can take a wide variety of handwritten notes and drawings, and you can associate any piece of text you choose: with dialing a phone number, with calling data on a subscriber, with creating an SMS / MMS or letter, with searching the Internet, searching on a map or with creating a task in S Planner.

The second item in the context commands is to cut a fragment. You can draw a pen around any area of the screen - and it will be saved in special application to store fragments.

The third item is a screenshot. Here, the ability to take a screenshot is duplicated, which in Samsung smartphones can be done by holding the edge of the palm across the display, which is very convenient. However, in this case after taking a snapshot, the picture appears in a special editor where this snapshot can be processed. (By the way, the screenshot editor after taking a picture with the edge of the palm can also be called - it is in the settings.) The fourth item is S Finder, that is, searching for content on a smartphone or on the Web using a text string. Well, the last item is to open in the window. This is one of the options for implementing multitasking. You can draw an arbitrary area on the screen, and in this area you will be prompted to open a calculator, clock, phone, browser, messages, YouTube, gallery, and so on and so forth. Moreover, the window with this application will be saved on the desktop as an icon, and you can call it in the future. Here, for example, messages in the form of such a mini-area.

I must say that the work with the S-Pen is noticeably improved here. If earlier there were some delays between the touch of the pen and the appearance of the image on the screen, now there are no longer any delays: there is a complete feeling that you are just writing with a pen or pencil. Multitasking also works as before: in the form of a sliding panel with applications that can occupy only part of the display. (This panel is enabled in the settings using the "Multiple windows" option.)

Two applications on the screen - mail and browser.

A long press of the power button brings up this menu.

Now let's go over some applications. Keyboard The keyboard here is comfortable, it has an upper numeric line, which is valuable. The only thing missing here is switching the language by separate button(I, like many others, do not like switching with a space gesture), and I would also like to have a Swipe mode, when words are typed by sliding your finger in the direction of the corresponding letters.

Flipboard News aggregator of various media and social networks. Very inflexible and in general it is not clear who needs it.

dropbox The Dropbox cloud service is included here. One of its main functions for a smartphone is the automatic saving of photos and screenshots in the cloud, which is very, very convenient.

Telephone The phone application is traditional for Samsung convenient and functional. The Contacts application is fully integrated into it (in standard Android it is done a little differently), in the Contacts tab there is a search bar at the top, there are various import-export functions, and you can also combine contacts from different accounts.

The phone application works perfectly: the sound is clear and without interference, the subscriber is heard very well, all subscribers heard me without any problems. SMS/MMS Message app. You can attach any type of media data to MMS (the choice is given to eleven applications in which media data is created), blocking of unnecessary messages and spam is supported, there is a delayed sending of messages. But what is missing is a secret secure folder for messages (many people need this opportunity).

Message menu.

Notes Text and handwritten notes/drawings to which you can attach various multimedia content.

A note can be made wallpaper for the desktop and lock screen, set as a contact picture, and so on.

Music Selection by compositions, artists, albums, and in addition, which is important to many, by folders.

Songs menu.

When listening through headphones, several types of sound adjustments are available. There is even a "thermal effect" tube sound"That's what science and technology have come to!

The speaker of the smartphone sounds loud enough and does not wheeze. In good headphones, music plays very well, especially if you adjust it, but the sound is still a little flat - even with the warm tube turned on. That is, I would not call the sound of this smartphone outstanding, but it is still no lower than a four. Video Ran the video. Everything up to FullHD is reproduced without any problems.

Video player menu.

Samsung Hub Stores from Samsung: videos, books, games, educational literature.

File manager Able to separately display media data from all drives.

Gallery Selection, viewing and editing of images.

Fragments Another option for notes, where with a stroke of the pen you can enter not only all sorts of images and screenshots, but also pieces of video - just select them with a pen and command them to be transferred to fragments.

Setting The settings here are very flexible and differ markedly from the usual android ones, so let's see what's interesting there.

Screen Mirroring is a handy thing, especially if you have a transmitter with which you can connect your smartphone to any modern TV.

Blocking mode is a useful feature: you can turn off incoming calls and notifications, for example at night.

The screen has all sorts additional settings brightness optimization.

Special abilities.

One-hand control options.

S Pen options.

Gesture control.

Very useful mode - "Driving".

More gesture control settings.

Camera The interface of the camera is simple and convenient.

Auto mode itself will choose settings depending on the environment.

Camera settings.

Now some sample pictures. (All are clickable, opening at 1920 in width.) A classic test for a smartphone - on this dark corridor, almost all smartphone cameras fail and give a noticeable pink spot in the middle. Here it is filmed with high quality, and almost does not turn pink.

Well, here's a video example. Well, the camera, in general, pleased. The Galaxy Note and Galaxy S have always had very decent cameras, and this one did not disappoint. It shoots well, gives very natural, not flashy colors, the automatic white balance almost never misses, very good dynamic range. Among the shortcomings - the focus is often missed, but this is observed in almost all smartphones (except for the Nokia 1020, where this is an order of magnitude better), so you just need to take two or three frames, just in case. Performance A purely practical smartphone is just atomic: in the sense that it is very, very fast. And tests confirm this. According to the Quadrant Standard - 18,078 parrots. The previous Note had 6583, the LG G2 had 19,981.

AnTuTu tests are at the very top of the table, 35,659. LG G2 has 26,716.

Battery Life In the first Note, the battery was a sore point: the smartphone was discharged very quickly. The second model was already noticeably better with this matter: at least she usually lived until the evening. In the third version, the battery capacity was increased by only 100 mAh, but here, apparently, they still worked on optimizing energy consumption, because according to tests, the smartphone showed a very good battery life. Internet. Comfortable 60% brightness without auto-adjustment, all on wireless networks, the browser reloads the page every 30 seconds. Almost exactly 12 hours - very cool. The second version lived under the same conditions for about half an hour less. Video. The "Airplane" mode is on, the brightness is set to 60%, in the MX Player with hardware acceleration, the series is spinning in a cycle. Almost the same as with the Internet - 12 hours. A game. Wireless networks are turned off, a 3D game (car racing) is spinning on the display at 60% brightness. Four hours five minutes. In the normal operating mode, the smartphone quietly survived until the evening, and if it was not used very actively, it could live on a single charge for a couple of days, especially if you optimize energy consumption. From the adapter, a completely discharged phone is charged in a couple of hours. Observations at work and conclusions During operation, no glitches were found. The smartphone works very stably, the back cover heats up quite a bit. There was one minor glitch with Navigon registration, but this is clearly a problem of the program itself, which also has not such jambs. GPS satellites are determined quickly, coordinates are tracked stably. I didn’t seem to expect anything special from the third version of Note, but it turned out that the model is just excellent, especially since they solved one of the main (for the inhabitants of sunny countries) problems: the image going to zero in direct sunlight. Now the display in the sun looks no worse than smartphones on IPS-matrices. Well, everything else here is just brilliance: hardware, software, battery. And the camera did not let us down. In general, I liked the smartphone so much that I could not part with it: now I use it as the main one, and LG G2 has moved to the background and is content with the Moscow SIM card. Cool smartphone in Samsung released, just cool. Now I'm just afraid to pick up the Samsung Galaxy S 5 ...

General characteristics

Type

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to stop the choice on the phone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.
