Designed To Protect You

Since 1997, Vredestein has worked closely with the world-famous Italian design studio Giugiaro Design. Giurgiaro himself and his son and successor Fabrizio Giurgiaro had a huge influence on both the trademark and the brands from Vredestein. This unique union of two brands brings success to both parties. The association between the Vredestein brand and the Giugiaro brand has also contributed to the fact that the Vredestein brand has become a premium brand with such important characteristics like safety and design.

Giugiaro Design is responsible for the tread and sidewall design of the Vredestein Ultra High Performance tire. Of course, Vredestein's specialist engineers have the deciding vote: the main purpose of a tire is safety, but a Vredestein tire combines both safety and design. Moreover, the results of international tests carried out on the tires have demonstrated that the tire's appeal lies not only in its striking appearance, but also in its excellent performance, which has allowed it to rank high in the test results every time.

2012 marked the 15th anniversary of the collaboration between Vredestein and Giugiaro Design. In honor of this unique event, Vredestein presented two new types of summer tires developed together with Giugiaro: Ultrac Vorti and Sportrac 5.

The Vredestein Ultrac Vorti summer tire is the result of close cooperation with the famous design company Giugiaro Design, which has been actively involved in the development of new models for almost two decades. The name of this tire was coined by an Italian design studio. Vorti is a derivative of the word Vortex, translated as “whirlwind.” According to the designers, this is the word that can be used to describe the tire’s ability to safely bear any load when driving at high speed. In addition, the tread pattern contains elements whose shapes have much in common with the visual effect that occurs when helicopter blades rotate.

A combination of stylish appearance and functionality

While working on the external appearance of the tread pattern, Italian designers tried to give it sportiness and innovation. However, in addition to the spectacular design, the asymmetrical tread pattern contains a number of original technical solutions that provide the tire with excellent performance characteristics.

In particular, the outer walls of the drainage channels have two angles of inclination. One of them is 45 degrees, which made it possible to increase the rigidity of the tread blocks. The result of this technical solution was a significant increase in the shape stability of the blocks under the influence of lateral accelerations, which had a beneficial effect on directional stability when cornering.

The walls of the transverse drainage channels also contain an additional angle of 10 degrees. In this way, Dutch tire makers managed to reduce rolling resistance, as well as noise levels. In addition, this shape of the walls of the transverse channels made it possible to significantly improve the distribution of external pressure over the contact patch, resulting in increased resistance of the tread to uneven wear.

Another distinctive feature of the asymmetrical pattern of this model is the arrow-shaped grooves located on the central longitudinal rib. These tread elements have significantly improved directional stability when driving at high speed.

Two options - for front and rear axle

This model is designed for powerful sports cars, many of which have tires of different sizes. As a rule, wider tires are installed on the rear axle, which allows them to effectively cope with high engine power. Especially for such cars, the Dutch manufacturer offers two tire options Vredestein Ultrac Vorti, which have significant differences, both in tread pattern and design. Tires designed for the front axle have increased drainage properties. In other words, they remove most of the water from the surface of the roadway. In turn, the tires installed on the rear axle provide maximum traction. That is why their pattern provides a higher void ratio than the front tires. In addition, the rear axle tires have a slightly changed angle of the belt layer. This made it possible to further increase the size of the contact patch.

4-radius profile shape

One of the key features of this model is the multi-radius profile. Most passenger tires have a contour of three radii. However, the profile of this model contains four radii, which made it possible to significantly increase the size of the contact patch, as well as improve the uniformity of the distribution of external load along it.

The main advantages of this technical solution appear when cornering, when the main load falls on the shoulder areas of the tread, which leads to a change in both the shape and size of the contact patch. New form profile made it possible not only to reduce the degree of these changes, but also to make this process smoother. The result of such technical tricks was stable and predictable behavior when cornering.

Main features of the Vredestein Ultrac Vorti tire

— The asymmetrical tread pattern, developed with the participation of Italian designers, is characterized by excellent performance in all road conditions;
— Various options for the front and rear axles provide an ideal balance of performance characteristics;
— A rubber mixture with a high content of silicon-containing elements, due to which the tire demonstrates excellent grip on wet surfaces and increased resistance to abrasive wear;
— Very wide longitudinal drainage grooves ensure rapid drainage of water from the contact patch, thereby providing excellent resistance to aquaplaning even at high speeds;
— The 4-radius profile of the tire ensures high stability and predictable behavior, especially when cornering.

* Attention: summer tires of non-Russian origin may be marked with the M+S designation

This year Vredestein and Giugairo will celebrate 15 years of successful cooperation, during which they have jointly created tires such as the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta and Vredestein Ultrac Vorti. In honor of this anniversary, it was decided to hold the presentation of a new joint creation at the headquarters of the Italian design studio in Moncalieri, a suburb of Turin. In total, more than 450 dealers and key partners of Vredestein attended the presentation, and the new product was called Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme S.

The new model replaces the Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme tires and is therefore optimized to cope with the most difficult conditions and extremely low temperatures. Special interlocking sipes (Internal Sipe Locking Technology, ISLT) have further enhanced the performance of the tires, which remain stable even at very high speeds - their Y speed index means they can be used at speeds of up to 300 km/h.

As the manufacturer notes, key features new tires provide excellent grip and handling on snow, ice and slush. The traction force has been increased by increasing the number of sipes, with the Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme S having two types of sipes. In the central blocks they are straight, which maximizes traction and braking efficiency on snow and ice, and in the shoulder areas they are zigzag, which improves maneuverability on slippery surfaces. The tread pattern includes two ultra-wide longitudinal grooves, which, in combination with V-shaped channels in the central part with a low void ratio, provide effective water drainage and high grip on wet surfaces. In addition to the M+S marking, the new tires are also marked with a snowflake symbol, allowing them to be sold as specialist winter tires in all regions of the world.

The compound includes an improved mixture of polymers, as well as a new generation silane, which has significantly increased the service life. In addition, this combination, according to the developers, helped to significantly reduce rolling resistance.

In addition to Giugiaro, which developed the symmetrical directional design, Vredestein worked on the new tires in collaboration with other renowned partners from the automotive industry, including tuning houses such as Carlsson, Hamann and Mansory. Vredestein has been actively cooperating with European tuning specialists for a long time, which, as the company says, allows new tires, including winter ones, to easily meet the requirements of the Ultra High Performance segment.

Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme S will be available in 12 sizes from 205/55 R16 to 275/30 R20.

Before the start of the season, Vredestein pleased our journalists with the presentation of three new products at once. Two Russian premieres, one world premiere.

Under the gentle Andalusian sun, we were invited to try out the third generation high-speed Sportrac tires, already well known in Europe, the Ultrac Sessanta UHP class, the release of which was timed to coincide with last year’s anniversary of the company, and their completely new modification Ultrac SUV Sessanta for city SUVs.

Let's try first

Unlike some of their more famous colleagues, the Dutch trusted our driving skills. We were politely asked to sign an agreement according to which we assume responsibility for possible incidents (a generally accepted practice), and then were allowed to “float freely.” From the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, we independently set off into the interior of Spain to the Ascari Race Resort high-speed track. Neither on the toll highway, nor on the mountain serpentine road did the tires remind us of themselves. Both Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz M-class “just drove”, obeying the actions of the driver. Conclusion made “on the road”: on asphalt the tires are surprisingly quiet and comfortable.

But on the track, or more precisely on three different sections of it and the adjacent area, they got it in full.

We started with a “wet” test: a snake, a semicircle and a corridor with braking on asphalt flooded with water. The only remark about the BMW on Ultrac Sessanta tires is that they didn’t give us much time to drive. At a “swirling” distance, you simply couldn’t feel aquaplaning. But the SUVs were a little carried away in one turn. It is a sin to blame the Ultrac SUV Sessanta for this: cars of this class have more weight and a higher center of gravity.

We move to the first high-speed ring. Following the instructions of the instructors, we slow down before turns, increase the gas at the exit, and bring the trajectory closer to the optimal one. If you follow the rules, no questions arise. What if not? After all, the advantage of a tire is the chance it gives to correct a mistake.

The character of Sessanta turned out to be “soft”. Forcibly rolling into a turn does not lead to a sharp break in the wheels; the car begins to “float” predictably. It’s difficult to compare directly with competitors, but the “anniversary” tire behaves quite decently.

We change to all-wheel drive. The second ring has large elevation changes and one very unpleasant left turn. The cars are not for circuit racing; you involuntarily choose the appropriate driving style. The Audi Q7 is annoying with its automatic transmission algorithm, the ML is much more sporty. Land Rover scared me a bit. A heavy car is not suitable for the track; from sudden braking, the brakes begin to overheat and become “naughty.” Indirect confirmation of the quality of the tires: the weak point is not them, but the pads.

I had to skip riding in a supercar with an instructor behind the wheel: if I had been allowed to drive, I might have tried to squeeze my enormous body into the miniature interior, and sitting curled up on the right was not a pleasure for me.

“Practical exercises” showed that Vredestein tires rightfully bear the title of Ultra High Performance. I won’t say it’s better or worse than its competitors: longer tests and more accurate measurements are needed. Feels like they are comparable.

From deeds to words

Breaking the established tradition, the technical presentation of the tires was held after a series of races. So, let's get acquainted.

Like all recent Vredestein developments, the Ultrac Sessanta family was created with the direct participation of the Italian studio Giugiaro Design. Tire designers determined the main external features of the tread pattern (approximate ratio of grooves and blocks, their approximate cross-section, etc.). The designers gave their ideas artistic perfection. Then the designers chose the most suitable options from their point of view and “taught them to walk.” Contrary to industry tradition, Vredestein UHP tires are not only not boring in appearance, but are dynamic and aggressive.

The main focus when creating the Ultrac Sessanta was on dry and wet road handling. The design is based on two ideas: a proprietary rubber tread compound, “tuned for handling” (HTTC - Handling Tuned Tread Compound), and a “sophisticated longitudinal tread pattern (SLD - Sophisticated Longitudinal Design).

The HTTS mixture contains silica and different types activated carbon, providing excellent handling on both dry and wet roads. Due to the large active surface, carbon particles bind well to polymers, forming a very durable tread material. Thanks to HTTC, Ultrac Sessanta tires are capable of transmitting extremely high forces when cornering, the magnitude of which is generally proportional to the maximum possible cornering speed. The peculiarity of the new tires is the smooth increase in force as the lateral slip angle increases and, accordingly, the predictability of behavior. Moreover, the force holding the tire in a turn does not decrease at large slip values, but remains at a sufficiently high level. high level. Due to this, it becomes possible to make additional precise adjustments to the course of movement. In addition to the mixture, both the tread pattern and the internal structure of the tire contribute to this improvement in performance.

The tread pattern of the Ultrac Sessanta is asymmetrical and non-directional: the central longitudinal groove is complemented by many diagonal “feathers” curved towards the outer shoulder. Something like the spread wing of a large bird. In the contact patch, the “oblique grooves” are never closed, since their length is greater than the length of the tire’s “imprint” on the road. Thus, the pattern can be considered as having four longitudinal grooves. Great solution to combat hydroplaning. To my question about the difference due to the different cross-section of the grooves bandwidth The company’s specialists responded that even the minimum cross-section is sufficient. And the difference will not cause one of the wheels to “float up”. But if this is so, then the excessive width of the beautifully expanding groove means a smaller “positive” area, larger specific loads, and therefore greater wear. Perhaps this growth can be neglected due to its insignificance. Moreover, service life is far from the most important indicator of Ultra High Performance tires.

But I would like to check another (purely speculative) conclusion. It is clearly visible on the contact patches that the “oblique” grooves point in one direction. On smooth asphalt this has no practical significance.

Remember our other roads and our methods of repairing them. A longitudinal “notch” on the asphalt, left by the passage of tracked vehicles or the removal of the top layer of old asphalt, working like rails, can theoretically “move” the car to the side. I hope that I am wrong, but I would advise those who purchase an Ultrac Sessanta to first take a closer look at the behavior of the tires in these unusual and, fortunately, rare road conditions. On the other hand, the original design has a massive outer shoulder. There is a quarter more positive (rubber) in it than in the internal one. Namely, the outer shoulder is most loaded in the turn. Hence the best directional stability and controllability on curves.

Among other technological solutions, it is worth noting the HTS+ (Handled Tuned Sidewall) sidewall design that has already become traditional for the Dutch. Due to the two-layer textile carcass, the side part of the tire is made more rigid, which allows it to better withstand the loads that arise during sharp turns. The technology was first tested on Sportrac 2 tires and was improved twice in subsequent models. HTS+ provides minimal sidewall deformation and maximum resistance to lateral forces due to greater axial stiffness. As a result, controllability in critical situations improves.

It is impossible not to mention another design feature- a shell made of metal cord. It is responsible for safety, in particular for steering accuracy. The breaker should be as rigid as possible, the frame should be as close to the tread as possible. To achieve the first goal, a special mixture composition is used between the layers of cord and the optimal angle of inclination of the threads is selected; for the second, rubber is applied only on one side of the outer nylon layer. Reducing the amount of rubber between layers brings the overall carcass closer to the road surface.

The Ultrac Sessanta tire immediately appeared in a wide range of sizes. This became possible through the use of a three-dimensional (3D CAD) computer modeling system P3DD (Parametrical 3Dimensions Design - parametric three-dimensional design). Combined with an extensive database, the system allows you to quickly respond to market needs and automatically optimize any required new tire size. Using the finite element method (FEM - Finite Elements Method), the optimal contact patch is also calculated.

It was the set of computer software that made it possible to quickly expand the Ultrac Sessanta line with a family of tires for sports-utility cars - the Ultrac SUV Sessanta.

Compared to sports cars, the now very fashionable SUVs and full-fledged SUVs place higher demands on tires. After all, often an engine worthy of a supercar is installed on a much heavier car. In general, the 2007 newcomers, similar to the Ultrac Sessanta tires, are distinguished by greater width and increased load capacity. So far, 12 sizes of Ultrac SUV Sessanta have been offered (from 225/65ZR17 108 V XL to 295/30ZR22 103 Y XL). There are more “passenger” standard sizes - 36 (from 225/45ZR17 94 Y XL to 295/25ZR20 95 Y XL).

The “target audience” of Sportrac 3 tires is more democratic. They are intended for more modest, but quite fast cars: Alfa Romeo 159, Volvo S40 and V50, VW Passat and their classmates.

The emphasis during development was on improving grip on wet roads. The tread pattern (V-shaped grooves in the center and powerful shoulder areas) was also developed by the Italians. The tire is distinguished by uniform pressure distribution in the contact patch, providing good grip, reduced wear and noise. The rubber mixture contains silica (high-silica solution V). We have already become familiar with the HTS sidewalls. 16-inch tires are equipped with an annular rib that protects the wheel rim from damage from curbs. The tire is characterized by good grip properties and reliable handling in corners. Sportrac 3 is the third generation of the family, which debuted in 1998. This is where Vredestein's collaboration with Giugiaro Design began. In 2003, the line was updated and now meets all modern requirements. In Russia this year, only four sizes of Sportrac 3 will be sold: 205/50R16 87V, 205/55R16 91V, 205/60R16 92V and 215/55R16 XL 97V.

Vredestein Bonden

The history of the Vredestein brand deserves respect. It began after World War II: in June 1946, the Dutch-American Vredestein plant for the production of tires for passenger cars was founded. Its largest shareholders were the Dutch company N.V. Rubberfabriek Vredestein and American (and then independent) BF Goodrich. Much has changed in six decades. A small company, by world standards, managed to resist transnational giants for almost this entire period. Traditional Dutch quality, skillful marketing policy, and our own developments helped us to withstand the most difficult competition. Most Porsche owners have known the accordion spare tire from Vredestein for more than three decades: a tire the size of a spare wheel in the stowed position, which turns into a full-size one when inflated.

In the early 90s, the Dutch developed the first low-profile “rain” tire (Aquatrac) with a speed rating of T (up to 190 km/h). Vredestein also surprises with the design of the tread pattern - cooperation with the world-famous atelier Giugiaro Design has been going on for more than 10 years.

In addition to passenger cars, Vredestein produces agricultural and motorcycle tires. In 2005, the company’s “proud independence,” unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), came to an end: it merged with the Russian Amtel. "Amtel-Vredestein" N.V." took one of the leading places among the largest European manufacturers, approaching the world's top ten. It is likely that Dutch technologies, multiplied by Russian money, will help the new association strengthen its position in the world market.

Race Resort Ascari

In September 2003, in the south of Spain, not far from historic Ronda and very close to Marbella, the world's first racing resort, Ascari, opened, combining a modern circuit racing track and a first-class hotel complex in a picturesque mountain valley.

The ring is built in strict accordance with FIA requirements. It is longer than most Formula 1 tracks and has twice the number of turns. The distance configuration can be easily changed. On the day of the presentation, the route was divided into three short sections. Each of the 26 turns has a different combination of radius, uphill/downhill, and rollover. The prototypes for many of them were such world-famous “curves” as Eau Rouge in Spa-Francorchamps, Daytona Parabola, Cops in Silverstone or Druids in Oolten Park.

The pit lane is somewhat shorter - only 8 full-fledged boxes. But in addition to the highway track, there is a six-kilometer dirt track for off-road vehicles and a buggy cross-country ring.

I don’t presume to judge the merits of the Andalusian Cortijo. Culinary recipes are from the same area. This is a matter for specialists who, by the way, have already awarded the resort with numerous diplomas and certificates.

Race Resort Ascari is not only about the tracks and the hotel. Ascari Club, an exclusive car club with a membership of no more than 500 people, attracts wealthy car owners not only with the opportunity to relax in a fabulously beautiful place after receiving another dose of adrenaline. Club members have a whole list of "motorsport privileges", including storage of their own racing cars. They offer the best rooms and all the facilities of the resort. Plus new business contacts. Much more democratic Ascari Race Academy is a racing academy where you can master management skills different types cars such as the BMW 3-series, Lotus Elise, Radical SR3, Formula Reynard, Ascari KZ1 and Benetton F1. Training programs take into account the time available to the client, his level of training and, of course, his needs and wishes.

If you wish to hold a sports event, presentation or, what the hell, an international race at the resort, Ascari Event Services will come to your aid. She will also book places in the nearest hotels, organize transportation of people and equipment, arrange hot air balloon rides, excursions to the Roman amphitheater or caves with prehistoric rock paintings. Or it will take you to the Mediterranean coast in 15 minutes.

My first thoughts upon arriving at the track: is it named after the legendary Alberto Ascari? Or maybe it belongs to his descendants? Or, more unlikely, is the great racer himself from these places?

The organizers of the presentation found it difficult to answer my questions. The “locals” came to the rescue. Only the first assumption turned out to be correct. And with a caveat.

In 1994, Ascari Cars was founded in England, indeed named after Alberto Ascari. A group of racing engineers set out to create a supercar. The first limited edition of 20 Ascari Ecosse was released in 1998. In 1999, the Ascari team was created, which later participated in sports prototype races, including the FIA Championship, daily races at Le Mans and Daytona, and the EuroBoss series over the years. In 2000, Ascari Cars built a new plant in Banbury, England to produce the new Ascari KZ1 supercar model. In addition, the founder of the company, Dutch engineer Klaas Zwart, acquired 174 hectares of land in Andalusia and built his own race track, where those interested can fully appreciate the merits of the car he designed and built himself.

So, to paraphrase the Soviet classic, Rase Resort is dedicated to “comrade Askari - man, car and factory.”

Mustang by Giugiaro

Here is another example of Italian-Dutch cooperation. The Mustang by Giugiaro concept was first shown to the public in November 2006 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The 500-horsepower engine was prepared by Ford Racing, the brakes were Brembo, the on-board electronics were Clarion, the transparent but UV-resistant roof was Solutia, and the wheels were OZ. And futuristic-looking tires are standard. From Vredestein.

Vredestein Sportrac 3

Sportrac 3 is the third generation of the family that began in 1998. The dynamic tread pattern of these tires (created by the same eminent Italians) is already well known in Europe. Deliveries to Russia began only recently. Currently only four sizes are offered. Everything is 16 inches.
